Changed the thermostat today in my 200 tdi, and now the heater works lovely, and for the first time ever the temp guage gets off the bottom and sits nicely in the middle.

I also have muffled the rad at the front, and another little tip - the 2 plastic shrouds that direct the air downwards towards your feet, I took off and put back on pointing up towards the driver / passenger, and that really makes a difference as you can feel the heat coming right at you.

I lost about a litre max of the original coolant mix when I took the top hose off the thermostat housing, I topped back up with water, didi I ought to get some more anti freeze into it ASAP or will I be OK? I am not sure how much liquid the whole cooling system takes.

All in all well worth an hour in the cold this morning.

as griff says yer should change it evry two years and worth flushing out the rad and intercooler will yer at it
on saying that ive has dirty river water in mine fer last 6 year since it over heated recovering someone on a really hot day
and its also had two cups of cold lack coffee in it
it seems ter still run fine

yu can use OAT in any injun - I use it in a 67 ford V8. Mainly for the corrosion inhibitors :D

long life oil - not particularly, but most oil suppliers are all moving over to fully synthetic "long life"

thamks for the advice, I read it takes about 11 or 12 litres altogether, so assuming the mix is about 50/50, I have only lost about half a litre of AF, so I am happy I will be OK until I get the chance to flush and change the lot.

I am actually looking forward to getting in it tomorrow at 630am!!!! How sad is that. Last week I froze my nuts off every morning.

Why did it take so long?

Pretty obvious you had a problem yet you ignored it - what else needs doing?

it was low on a list of jobs I have been working through, but the cold spell hit and it suddenly shot to the top of the list.

I have done loads of other stuff like refrbing rear axle casing, polybushing, transfer gear....a long list - I had always suspected the stat, but never expected such a huge difference.

88 degrees, same as the old, the old one was all scalled up and jammed open by only about 1mm, but it has made a huge difference.
