Does converting to electric kill the Defender spirit or prolong & enhance the experience?

For a whopping 200 miles you can enjoy the quiet.

I bet it gets pretty quiet when it runs out of juice and there's no plug in sight, as well.

At least the child miners of the Congo will still have work. There's a lot of cobalt, nickel and copper to be mined to enjoy that quiet greenlane experience or a silent drive to town for shopping. :confused:

Wow, EV misinformation bingo, at least there is no Cobalt, Nickel or Copper used in regular ICE cars or fuel refinery is there. Thanks for your interest though, I will.

What misinformation did I quote about EVs?
None.
You added info (of which I'm aware, but not swayed by, since an EV use 500% more mineral resources than an ICE) but I missed nothing in my statement. However, I did forget the lithium mining.

Why do you want one? To save the planet? To save on petrol? Or do you just like new gizmos?

I don't think there are any child miners in the Congo.
The mining there is mostly open cast, and uses huge machines, which are driven by highly paid and skilled operators.
A lot of Nickel is actually mined in Canada, where they certainly don't use child miners.

Mining of rare earths is a bit more questionable, as they mainly come from China. But there is progress on that, large deposits of rare earths have just been found in Sweden.

EVs wouldn't be suited to your lifestyle, but they are actually fine for City driving, which is what most of the World's population actually do.

If he wants to drive an electric Defender, it is up to him if he doesn't mind paying for it.

And who does the estimating? A mining company that operates somewhere else?
What is certainly true is that there used to be a lot of child labour in Cornish mines. It was considered normal to take one's son down the mine from the age of 8. They couldn't do all that much, but they did small jobs, and learned skills that would enable them to earn well later in life.
 
As much as I despair of getting rid of the V8 sound track.
The EV has a place in the modern world, in a defender I am not so sure;).

Now being "green"(not me) how will you charge it? It may seem a silly question, but if you will be doing small miles which as an EV is probably true where is the electrickery coming from? now if you say you are going to charge it at home with your solar panels I applaud you:).

I fully understand the need/want to do your bit for the world. But it isn't for me/us at the moment, my Mum & Dad would probably be fine:).

Now if you have chat a bit more you could probably sell you left over "tat" to a good home, Or;) as an avid EV advocate you would have it crushed:eek:.
But if it was sold to somebody that could then use it instead of buying new, I believe thats called recycle and is great:D. better than digging stuff out of the ground whatever you use it for;).

Maybe just to **** you off it seems? But as you are asking I’ll indulge you, save in the knowledge you may think my view BS.

I was struggling to justify owning owning a petrol/diesel vehicle, but I equally don’t want to give up ownership of a classic vehicle for which I have a long relationship with. The conversion allows me the chance to give the car a new start as an EV, breathes new like into it, lengthens it’s life, improves its reliability and sets it up for the future of fossil free transport. Using second hand reconditioned motors & batteries circumvents some of the issues with virgin resources & avoids waste. From my initial calcs I’m avoiding circa 65-70T of CAPEX & OPEX carbon emissions. On the fun side, this is a super exciting project … and life is too f***ing short to care about other peoples opinion.

How often do you think the OP will be driving 200 miles in one go? Probably not many, that's over 2 weeks of driving for me, and I live in a rural location.

I hope you realise that Cobalt is used in the production of fossil fuels, and I can guarantee that none of that is sourced responsibly, making your argument just more fossilganda.
The fossil fuel industry has been spread this BS about EVs for over a decade, simply to try to keep it's stranglehold on the planet. It seems to work as people are suckered into believing it. :confused:

Oh and using reclaimed batteries means the argument is moot anyway.;)

Fossilganda is far deeper reaching than most people know.
Greenwash as a term was thought of by the fossil fuel industry.

The fossil fuel industry will spin all sorts of BS if it helps them keep a stranglehold on global finance and corrupt governments like ours.

An short update to this post in regards to the conversion process for those that are interested; I dropped the car off down in Mid-Wales with the team at ECC. It'll be with them for a few months, but they have already removed much of the old ICE drive system, including the old V8 and transmission. I'm led to believe this is a relatively unusual setup based on it being a South African assembled motor ... not sure if any of you guys have any knowledge of this? (5 Speed, Petrol V8).
The engine will be replaced with '2nd hand' Tesla drive unit (off a Model 3) and batteries (16 of them) to give it 100kWh. I downgraded the motor to reduce the acceleration slightly and focus on range. These all come from insurance right-offs and thereby enhances the sustainable focus of this conversion.
I also had the chance to drive the (e)Spectre version while I was there. Pretty incredible what they have achieved and it certainly still feels very much like an old Defender, but with the reliability and ability to hear the World around you --- although I'm sure there are others on here that don't want either of those things!:D

I just saw your Landy on the ECC workshop review. It really does look like it is in fantastic condition! I look forward with interest when it is complete. I seriously would do the same to my 90 if I had the money.

Thanks My Old Landy, lets be honest, it is expensive & I’ve been saving hard to do this working overseas, but keen to share more of the build & experience over the coming months.

They might. I’ve said I’m more than happy for them to do so. The 110 has been stripped now (as the eagle eyed would spot) with EV installation works imminent. Looking at 100kW with a Tesla Model 3 motor and CCS charging capability.
