Ok- I am embarrassed asking such simple silly questions but as a complete newbie its worth asking....

I am after a 90 to use as a fun vehicle to commute my 3 miles to work in Devon and to take me and kit around the lanes (Surf/paddle/bike).

I have looked at and test driven a few already but have been reluctant to part with cash as I have no idea if I am being ripped off! I was tempted to overspend my budget and get a newer one for peace of mind but think thats silly.

I am looking at a 90 tonight. D reg, 130k miles. Photo looks ok but the guy seems a novice like me. He says he does not know what engine it is but has "turbo deisel" sticker on the back!!! How will I know?

Apart from Chassis, bulkhead, smoking or white around oil cap what else id REALLY important to check. Obviously a nice test drive to check how much it pulls and runs straight but anything else worth checking??

I am sure I will raise a smile with such basic questions but guess we all have to start somewhere.

Obviously this is a difficult question but the 90 has CSW conversion in the back but DVLA lists it as a VAN. ball park wise is £2k too much money?

Thanks in advance for advice...all is VERY MUCH appreciated.

If it is in really really good condition then £2k is the top of the price range but not exorbitant. So your task is to knock the price down by picking it to pieces. Take someone with you who knows Landrovers. You've covered the major things to look for already. So make sure you do look really hard at all those places. Prod Poke and knock to make sure nothing has been covered up, especially the inboard side of the chassis & rear crossmember. Crawl under with a Good torch. The engine is almost certainly a 2.5ltr Turbodiesel which if well looked after are reasonable engines. However a 200tdi engine swap is fairly easy and very cheap at the moment. so don't be too put off if the engine smokes a lot or doesn't pull very well thru the gears. Just knock £400 off the asking price. Remember above all there are plenty out there and the prices are dropping rapidly so don't just jump at the 1st one that comes along. Also consider a disco they will do everything a 90/110 will do and £2k will get your a R/S/T reg 300tdi. Only major problem with discos is they rust.

I am currently in South Wales but moving to North Devon in two weeks!

Thanks for replies....it seems as though the landies really hold their money!

I looked at a really clean M reg at a garage that sells parts NOT landies anymore but it only had 77k miles. REALLY clean (scarily clean I might say) and they wanted 4500. Seemed good money for it as it drove sweet and looked all origianal paint etc. Was also a 300 tdi! Should I bite the bullet and overspend my budget?? Or should I be careful with something that looks too clean?

The garage (used to sell landies) also said that they would change cambelt if it needed doing for the same 4500!
Oh and it was an original CSW

Can't really offer you advice in buying Land Rovers as such because I bought mine as a rolling project. In buying any cars though I would always say buy the best you can realistically afford.

Try and locate someone in your area who knows what they are looking at to come and check it over.

Don't pay for any of these AA/RAC inspections as they are to general and certainly not specific enough to check a Land Rover! As an example I had one done (free through insurance fortunately) on a Nissan 200SX that was at a main dealer and they managed to miss the fact that the car had been stuffed so hard the chassis was bent!

As a rough guide to price, an independent Land Rover dealer near me recently sold 2 M reg 90 CSWs for £7500. The dealer in particular is know to be on the pricey side but not £3k pricey so £4500 seems a good price. Prices on Autotrader also bear this out.

Good luck.

hmm
hard to comment without seeing it.
Are you confident that you know enough to spot a pup? Have you had a good look underneath?
Whereabouts is it for sale?

well, if it's 93, it should be a 200TDi.
NI plates shouldn't be a problem.
Doesn't read as if the dealer knows Landys, or he's trying to mislead peeps into thinking it's a TD5.

Thanks. The landy is in England. One owner. If it drives straight and does not show signs of bad chassis ect is it worth £2750?

Guessing its 1993 so either a K or L reg.

Thats what i thought i'd push for. Thanks for advice. He says he doesn't know if cambelt has been done or not. How will I tell?

Is it expensive to have it done?
