Hi I posted a few weeks back about a beeping from the headlining. It turns out (having investigated) that the beeping is coming from beneath the passenger door cill trim in line with the b pillar. Noise was travelling up the pillar which is why it seemed to come from the head lining. There is a wired in speaker stuck to the cill and a black tubular item taped up the b pillar trim which is linked to the same wiring. See photos. I do have video of the beeping but it won’t upload for some reason. The wiring heads off under the passenger floor well carpet. What is this? The beeping is driving me mad. It happens after 2-3 minutes of starting the engine and beeps about 8 times. Is it part of the car or a tracker? Having bought the car second hand I have no paperwork relating to a tracker. Hoping to be able to remove it or failing that just cut the speaker wires? Thanks for any feedback.

Trackers don't normally have speakers to advertise where they are.
Maybe it's some kind of warning, a reverse sensor.
I'm curious as to where the other tube thing is going to.

So I have traced the wires from the speaker and antenna under the passenger footwell carpet and up beside the fuse box (below the glove box). The wires then take a fused feed from one of the harnesses (clearly a retro-fit) before crossing under the fuse box and up above it. Here some of the wires run into another section of harness, while two others pass through the engine bulkhead. On the engine side I found a relay (lying loose in behind the battery) which the two wires connect to. A pair of heavier wires then run into the shrouded section of harness that runs down beside the battery compartment and across the top of the gearbox toward the starter motor, alternator, etc. If I take the fuse out in the passenger footwell the car won’t start so I’m guessing an immobiliser. Why would an immobiliser have an antenna (the ‘tube thing’ you refer to)? If it’s a combined immobiliser and tracker is there any way of finding out which tracker it is (manufacturer) and where it might be linked to (i.e. who would be monitoring it)? Should there be a ‘black box’ somewhere that I’ve not found yet?

It sounds like it's an additional immobiliser, which has been installed by someone.

I'm sure you can simply disconnect the supply from the fuse box, then link out the relay.
It's completely unnecessary on this car, as unless the key is inserted into the dock module, the ECM isn't powered, and the steering lock isn't disengaged, so it couldn't be started or driven using the factory security system.

Many thanks for your latest comment. I’ve carried out more investigation by removing the glove box. The wires are visible behind and they go to a ‘box’ that sits under the airbag fitting. Can you just confirm that this ‘box’ is not part of the normal Freelander instal? I am assuming this is the ‘brain’ of the tracker / immobiliser?

Just to close this thread out in case others have a similar query in future. It was a tracker and immobiliser (Auto-txt unit) which I have now stripped out. Wasn’t entirely certain until I got the box and wiring out and found manufacturers details on the main unit. Auto-txt closed down some years ago. I guess the beeping was warning that the system link back to Auto-txt was no longer functioning.

Hi there, so grateful to find this thread because I suspect I may have a similar issue. I have recorded a video to illustrate what happens every time I start up my Freelander every morning. Any help would be great! Thanks

It actually isn't allowing me to upload a file for some or other reason. Anyways, every morning when I start the engine a high pitched beeping noise comes from the speakers which seems to be linked to the sat nav screen. The sat nav screen will flicker on and off and then after a few minutes a connection with the sat nav screen will be established and the noise will disappear. Any one else struggled with something similar?
