Hi, I've strayed over from the series bit and am not that knowledgeable on the Discos, so please be vaguely nice :)

My every day mondeo has just f**ked itself so have been looking for a new car.

I Have been offered a 52 plate Disco 2, 150k on the clock. It currently has intermittent power issues, some times it will work perfectly some times it will loose all power and not start. Is this at all a common thing? Or could it be one of a million different things? I've been currently offered it at £3k but if i don't want it, it will get it fixed and then be around £4.5k.

I know the rest of the history of the car (t'is the gf's dad's which he's had from new) It's not in terrible condition, been used as a bit of a van inside, so a bit tatty in the boot, but nothing that 1/2 a day cleaning and tidying wouldn't sort.

From looking around the price doesn't seem too bad??

Thanks :)

So what kinda price range would you expect? (i realise this is hard without seeing the motor, but, a vague range would be a good help)

if it was me then between 3-4K max as its got problems and its been given a hard life i wouldnt offer anywhere near what he wants, but thats just me

three grand doesnt sound too bad but I would try and find someone with a nanocom/hawkeye and get it plugged in to see what faults are showing

mines on a W plate with 140k on the clock and and I paid just under 3k for mine and so far I have spent about another 700 -800 quid putting things right, but that does include a remap and waxoil

I am very pleased with mine

BoB - if i got a defender i'd off-road it and break it. I need something for the every day stuff not the play stuff. The joy with a disco is it can do every day stuff then in a few years can be converted into a toy.

Maybe i'll wait till he get's it all fixed up, then offer him a low price and use the gf to persuade him... :)

Significantly overpriced at £3000 with big miles scuffy interior and a dodgy runner.

I would say in it's current state it is worth nearer to £1500.

I've just bought a 2000 TD5 auto with 95k on the clock, impeccable history and condition for £2300.

Be patient, look carefully and find value.

TD5's are lovely daily cars, as well as awesomely competant offroad - just don't pay too much for one.

What is the single largest cost of running a car? - Depreciation, that's what. If you buy right, you'll avoid this massive cost.

Thanks. I shall take my time.

There's no certainty i will end up with a Disco yet, i want one (mainly so i can tow my series around the country instead of doing it all at 50mph) but it might have to wait till the gf's earning too to help pay the mortgage. But if i can get one in the right condition at the right price i will :)
