Hi folks,
I'm six days into owning my '99 4.6 HSE P38 and I love it!!
Having searched the forum I've managed to solve 2 or three problems and have identified a few more :).
Like many other owners I have only been supplied with one key fob but have been pleasantly surprised to find the key number sticker still on the back. Obviously I need to buy a second key from a main stealer but one question I have been unable to answer though is this, while browsing through the paperwork and bills etc I found a receipt for a replacement BECM so will a new fob from the dealer sync as normal or will extra magic and trickery be involved?

Was the replacement Becm supplied & fitted by a Main Stealer or Independant ? It is possible for a replacement becm with a matching keyfob (Using the original blade) to be programmed and fitted to the car. However, if this is done and the LR database has not been updated with the "New" FOB (Lockset bar code) then a new keyfob from a Dealer would be as much use as tits on a bull. I suggest you make enquiries to the people who supplied and fitted the Becm and the previous owner to clarify before jumping in and ordering a new keyfob and laying out over £150 (Cash up front) which is non refundable if the FOB code is wrong.
Alternatively, there are people on here who can read the Becm settings and tell you if the FOB code stored in your Becm is in fact the one that matches your VIN. You may have to remove the Becm and send it away for a couple of days but looking at your location, Rick the Pick who is based in Brighton may be able to do it "While you wait", he's highly respected on here...send him a PM if he doesn't pop his head over the parapet on this post. :behindsofa::D:D
 
Update: I'm still pursuing the history of the BECM and will post more info as and when I have it. On another tack I've been reading a thread by Clarky130 regarding a guide he has written about fitting after-market head units in the P38. I PM'd him nearly 2 weeks ago and as yet have had no response. I have since seen a further thread by him regarding the sale of his P38 so he may no longer be a member of this forum. Does anyone have either a copy of his guide or a link where I may download it?

Or you could just order an emergency key - they used to be about £6 from a main dealer against your vin.If it fits the locks order a full fob jobby.

You are right,unless they changed the Becm and locksets complete from another car. - I was just assuming people would do things properly....
 
Hi folks, thanks for all the advice so far. According to the invoice I have, the work was done by an independent specialist in Wiltshire and I quote 'Replaced BECM and programmed to vehicle'. There is no mention of replacing locks or keys.
I have searched and found their current web page and will ring them sometime on Monday to see if this means that they also updated the Land Rover database so that I will be able to buy the correct replacement keys.
Is it possible that if I went to a main stealer for keys they could read the replacement BECM and program the FOB accordingly or isn't it quite that simple?

All a main dealer can do is to read the vin out of the Becm with Testbook,which should match the cars vin.Beyond that a main dealer will just order keys against that vin - probably after you have paid in advance.If it doesnt work you are on your own.
 
Update: I have spoken to the garage that did the BECM replacement and they have confirmed that the BECM was supplied by Land Rover and it was programmed with the 'lockset code' for the vehicle. They also suggested that as I have Key 2 I should get Key 1 or 3 when ordering the new key.
I will of course update when I get the new key but need a fresh supply of circular tuits and cash before this happens.
