Hi,

I have heard a few horror stories about Beaumont VCU's and I have just had one fitted to my Freelander 1.

Are they still the "loose" VCU or have they decided to go to OEM Spec now?

I am going to be off roading and towing a twin axle caravan too.

Do I need to speak to the specialist and request a different VCU?

The majority of recon vcu's are "looser" than original gkn brand new genuine vcu's supplied on brand new Freelander 1's or as brand new genuine replacement parts, when comparing them on the one wheel up test. Results vary even from the same reconditioner. A brand new land rover genuine vcu is not the same as a:

genuine land rover vcu reconditioned
fully reconditioned genuine land rover part
original gkn fully reconditioned genuine land rover vcu

In the same way a reconditioned engine isn't the same as a new engine. If the vcu is reconditioned then they're not genuine and it's misleading to hint they are with clever wording. They recondition them to their own spec/judgement which doesn't include the exact same fluid gkn used on the originals as know one knows the secrete mix. They have come up with their own "solution". More often than not owners wouldn't notice as they prefer a "looser" vcu as the feeling of the car changes and they like the feel, after comparing to a stiffer failed vcu they've removed.
 
Thanks my concern is that my 4wd capability is now going to be affected and with towing a large twin axle caravans across a boggy field this could lead to problems!!

Where can I get a Genuine New unit and what should I expect to pay?

Ok I am not sure this is the correct procedure but here goes......

I have just lifted the back end on to axle stands so both wheels are off the ground.

I then chocked the front wheels released the handbrake and tried to turn the rear part of the prop shaft by hand.

With a lot of force I can start to get it moving a couple of cm's at a time.

Should this be possible?

What does it indicate?

that is what should happen you get a bar X length with X weight on the end and time it while it drops there is a sticky thread about VCU results just read that for length and weight and post back with the timed result

and see if you in the average people were getting

my VCU drops instantly because mine is stuck open but until i can afford to fix it at least i no it isnt going to trash my 4x4 system
 
So if I am reading this right if it drops fast it means I have a crap 4 wheel drive capability?

If it drops slowly the 4 wheel drive system will be better?

I will get that done asap and post back
 
When I was fitting my new Bells recon VCU I would just turn the rear prop to line up the bolts by inserting a screwdriver through the UJ.
 
So does anyone know if Beaumonts do an OEM spec VCU that will give me proper 4wd capability for when towing caravans across a fieldas opposed to this"loose" version I keep hearing about??
 
I wish I had gone to them In the first place but I went to a local specialist who has fitted
Me A Beaumont reconditioned unit. Now I get the feeling I am going to have problems.
 
Do a search on here for Beaumonts.
Threads over 2 years old on **** re-con VCU's from them giving no drive to the rear wheels.
 
Yeah seen those but was hoping that in the last 2 years they might have changed their ways!!!! I think the only way to do it is take it in a muddy field with a trailer and see how we get on.
