Hi all,

I have a 52 plate discovery td5 auto with 92000miles on the clock and a couple of problems.....namely an oil leak and the M&S lights flashing.

Firstly I think my M&S lights may have something to do with the battery. I have already changed the wxyz switch andwhen they started flashing again I went back to the dealership and they found nothing wrong with it soI read somewhere the battery can cause the lights to flash.
With the engine running in my discovery the battery voltage is hovering around 12.5, switch the ignition to position 2 and it drops a little to about 11.9v then when you crank it to start it drops down to between 9.9 and 9.3v then when running it raises to 14.8v. As I mentioned I have been reading on the internet that a battery voltage below 9v can cause the lights to flash due to a low voltage signal being sent to the gearbox ecu...is this correct and does it sound like the reason for my lights flashing????

After switching it off I clambered all over it and found a leak below the car. It seems to be at the rear of the engine at the bottom just behind what I take to be the sump where it joins to the bell housing(??)There is three little thumbsize holes which are almost circular located next to this joint, one at the 6o'clock position and one either side of this....there is oil dripping out the bottom holes or the mating surface just next to this...Has anyone any idea where it is coming from????or if it is going to be costly.....

Cheers Ryan

1. Battery and MS lights - your battery sounds like it is on the way out to me. However, you might like to try this: start the engine AND THEN WAIT FOR 10 - 15 SECONDS BEFORE SELECTING ANY GEARS. The idea is that the wait allows time for the alternator to start pumping juice into the batery before the gearbox ECU demands volts.

2. Oil leak - Are you sure the leaking fluid is oil and not diesel? There is a know problem with the Fuel Pressure Regulator (FPR) leaking diesel and running down the bellhousing.

A good battery at rest (everything switched off) should show 13.2v or close to it. A quick check connect volt meter to battery turn on headlights voltage will drop (obviously) switch lights off after about 15 seconds voltage should return almost to what you had before turning lights on. If you only have 12.5v to start with the battery could do with replacing.

battery voltage is 12.5v at rest nothing switched on and with the lights on it drops to 11.7v, lights switched off it lowly creeps back up to 12.4v

I switch the engine on with the selector in P and the lights started flashing straight away. I then moved it through r and the lights where still flashing and the R was on the dashboard and the LED light up beside the R on the selector. I then went into N and it came up on the dashoard N and the LED was on the when I put it into drive It selected drive but the LED didnt light up and the D didnt appear on the dash.....
