Please could anybody advise me every time i starte my H reg 200tdi Defender the battery light comes on when idling and its not untill i put some revs on that it goes out. Please could anybody tell me if it should go out just after it starts and if so what could be causing it to stay on.

I don't think it's anything to worry about, just so long as the light goes out when you blip the throttle(and this is all it should need ) then all will be well. If it stays on though then you have an alternator fault.

gonna be a pain if he gets stuck in 10 miles of traffic, with his lights, blowers and tunes on - hope his battery is a good un unless he wants to keep revving it

check tick over speed isnt too low
 
It's a sign of a alt that is wearing out. To start charging you have to energise the stationary coils (I.e turn them into a magnet) it just means that is not happening at tick over but a quick blip of the pedel causes them to get up enough field strength for it to maintain enough output to keep them energised - there's loads of stuff on the net about how alternators work if my explanation is not quite clear without pics etc.

Bottom line is that you will find it's not charging as well as it used to but if it's keeping you charged then that good for now. Mine has been like this for two years and just gave up the go a week ago
 
my v8 did that exact same thing but i changed the alternator to a 100 amp one from alternator mart in the back of landrover monthly an it doesnt do it anymore. is also useful for when your winching etc it keeps the winch pulling on full power
 
might be time to overhaul yer electrics , clean earths , battery terminals etc.

the other day i was driving in snow , crawling along for 1/2 hour or so , wipers , heater and lights on. battery was flat as a pan cake when i tried to start it shortly afterwards. my alternator also needs a blip on the throttle to make it work , time for a new one i think.

has anyone ever heard of those special alternators designed for off road use? i remember readin about an expedition 110 that had one fitted.
 
haldrauds couldn't test their own peesh for wetness.
my alternator is only 45 amp anyhow but it should run a heater (10 amps or so?) lamps (8amps or so?) and wipers (10 amps maybe?) , my battery is pretty new and all my lectrics are in good shape cos i overhauled everything in the summer sept my alternator.
