Hi guys, i am a mechanical idiot so need help, bought my loved 300 tdi Eviemore in January and it has run beautifully with no problems until yesterday. When I started her there was a squeaking sound like a slipping fan belt but quieter for a short time then the battery light came on and the rev counter stopped working. Please tell me this is an easy fix and won't cost a fortune. Everything else is still working fine. Thanks

Sounds like the belt driving the alternator, fan and water pump is slipping. This will cause the alternator to not charge the battery, and since the rev counter on a diesel is driven from the alternator as well, it will stop working too.

Check the belt tension before you do anything else- if the water pump is slipping too, overheating will result. You should be able to adjust the belt tension by rotating the alternator on its mountings.

IIRC, all the 300 TDI's had a serpentine belt with the spring tensioner. Given the inclusion of "Aviemore" - I presume we are talking about a Disco 1 special edition. If so and your belt is missing, get it fixed asap, no water pump will create a world of (expensive) pain - the screetch may have been the alternator bearings departing this life.. or perhaps the water pump...

post more detail, or even a piccie under the bonnet.....(pls):D
