Battery Guage

the battery guage on the 90 does it monitor the voltage of the battery or does it monitor the output of the alternator?
mine the needle used to sit smack bang in the middle of the dial but now sits under 1/4 on the white line near the orange section.
my winch and spotlights are all being connected next weekend and i am having a split charge system fitted,if the guage is reading the battery and its poor,am i worth changing the battery so that the kit will run 2 matched batterys.or is it the alternator?..there is no movement on the needle even with lights on etc..any ideas??

it is normally coonected to the White (switched Ign) live. Ideally it should be directly across the battery, however, they have been known to drain the battery or cause a fire!!

. The voltage across the battery should be the same as the Alternator output, when the Alternator is charging. The state of the battery can be determined by what this voltage under no load, loaded and charging conditions is.

so do you think the battery is poor and i should replace when i do the split charge?

I would check the voltage across the battery with a DMM, in case there is a high resistance in the feed to the gauge. One of the advantages of a dual battery system is that (with a minor mod) you can engage both batteries for starting.

ya my mates sorting that,apparantly the winch can also draw power from both batteries thru the relay however that works?

yu dont want both batteries to power the winch - the idea of having a split charge system is the the winch wont discharge the "Starting" battery - that is why they are seperate systems witha "split charge". It is however, useful to be able to jumper both together if your "starter" battery is low and yo secondary battery aint. - just needs a diode in the battery light circuit to the relay to stop back EMF when the jumper ( a momentary switch) is shorted.

apparantly if the winch is under load and one battery is struggleing it will draw power thru the 2nd battery via the relay,its not a permanant thing

only if the engine is running - always a good idea

. One of the reasons why a high amp relay is a good idea.

Ahh see I would of gone with a flux capacitor too just to be sure.

I tried to check, but couldnt tell so I took some piccies, does anyone know if this is the right part?

The power is rated at 1.21 gigawatts for this one.
