Good evening all,
Why does there seem to be so little 'reserve' in the battery? Before I found out how to turn off the int. lights, I had had the doors open and closed quite a bit (cleaning it out, oiling hinges and adjusting the catches). Next morning it wouldn't start, very sluggish turning over. Changed the battery, and all has been well until today. I switched to position 1 to get the sounds on at lunchtime and must have forgotten to switch it off again. Came to come home this evening and again, wouldn't start, sluggish turn over etc. Started easily on jump leads. Will I have to carry a spare battery to be safe? How come a great big battery like that can't stand a bit of drain?
I would appreciate your comments ...
thanks

how old is the battery? get a big one, Datatek has a link to 1000CCA one, I think.

its most likely an old battery with a wake-up problem. disconnect the receiver aerial.

I must admit it is secondhand - but its a good one I think. The original was one of those with a little window on the top. I charged it up and even though I've used it for an inspection lamp for three months its still showing green (charged) - so I think that one was okay too... and they are both big yuns...

How have you tested it no point putting a multimeter on it it only tell you the volts its holding not not what condition it's it when a load is applied radios and and lamps don't draw much starter motors do get it properly tested its free.

I had similar issues with two Alphaline batteries, the constant drain recharge pretty much ****ered them (though with one only being 6 months old and the other 3 weeks before they started having problems I think I got the bad ones from the batch). The only true fix is to contact your local Land Rover dealer and request part YWY500170 then fit a new battery.

But be warned, they are restricted parts as such can only be ordered from LR and you will need to provide ownership details including VIN. All for the nice sum of £280 inc VAT. Right now LR have an ETA of October. So if you want to fix the problem, phone your local dealer and join the queue.

Bix is this just a certain age of car that has these probs ie pre 99??
Or could its just be area and the type of signals ??

As I understand it, it is area. Pre99 have a bigger issue with it as as Post99 they tried the Mk2 receiver to solve the problem which blocks out a lot of problems but if there is enough interference it'll still cause grief.

I've had my RR a couple of years now and never had a problem until quite recently. So I assume a new phone mast, wireless device or something of the sort has been installed.

Do not forget wireless door bells, garden weather stations or computer wi fi. Sound like your battery is on its way out. Little drain from interior lights so as stated get it tested. If the battery is found to be OK then disconnect the aerial from the r/f or pre 99/00 disconnect it completely and see if it is still going flat. If you need a new battery then pm Datatec, he gave me a site who supplied me with the most powerful battery that will fit the P38. cheers

I had sluggish starter motor and had new brushes fitted and cured the problem as it was draining the battery big time and would go flat after about 10 sec of starter.
Check how hot the starter gets after cranking

I bought my new type receiver from island4x4, why would log books be required as they are not coded to anything? Although I think supplies of them are starting to get thin on the ground.

Radios draw quite lot of power especially if the volume is turned up, interior lights also, amp hours is the key, a starter draws a lot for a very short time so not many amp hours, lights and radio draw much less but over an extended period it will add up to more amp hours and if the battery is tired and/or the alternator is not charging correctly will soon give you a flat battery.
Batteries lose capacity with age.
Early RF receivers cause battery drain problems.

I phoned them a few weeks back and was told they are now restricted parts. No retailers can get hold of them. The parts aren't coded, they are just logging vehicles which order the part so if you order multiple against the same VIN it'll be refused. The woman I am dealing with told me that if a new unit fails they need it returning before LR will release a new one. 1 part per vehicle.

It does appear to me they are being made to order though, given the lead time and cost.

Nobody makes stuff like that to order, it's uneconomic, they will be made in batches, maybe the stock levels are getting low and they don't want to make more.

Doesn't justify a 2 month lead time. Unless they are all stored in a secret vault and the parts people have to go on some massive adventure to slay a dragon, help a friendly troll and rescue a princess to get the bloody thing. Or they only have a run every year or so and the next run is in October.

The woman on the phone was surprised to find it is a restricted apart though. She rang me about about 20 minutes after I put in my order to apologise for not knowing and then again about 1 hour later to tell me about the huge lead time.

Once she is done with this silly G20 nonsense. I understand now why Cameron's agenda was trade links. He probably has a beached RR too waiting for those lazy German's to plump out some new parts. :p
