Battery, does it just sit in the box on the metal?

Hi guys/lady’s
as the title says in the battery tray does the battery sit straight onto the metal, or is there meant to be a plinth or something for it to sit on, I just fitted ore seat box protectors and was curious about this when I removed the battery

Unless the modern version had retaining battery support then no. Most sat lose or add a cut camp bumroll foam. If the weather harsh a silverbacked version to keep the battery warm.

I think it just sits on the metal as standard. But if it bothers you, it is easy enough to cut out a piece of camping mat or similar to stand it on.

If you do this, be careful to not block all the vent holes, which are there to allow hydrogen gas to escape.

They were a moisture trap causing a lot to rot. Worth hamerite inside and wax outside.

Thanks guys, I made sure to plaster the whole box in duck oil so hopefully that will keep the pesky moisture out for a minute or two, i may do as suggested and put a mat underneath but it’s been like this for 16 years so a few more can’t hurt

I thought it was an mot requirement to have the battery securely fastened down? Mine has a length of angle iron with two threaded hooks.

It is. As far as I know they all have the angle iron and threaded bars.

But I don't think that is what the chap is asking. He is saying should there be anything underneath the battery before the angle iron secures it.

I would leave out the matt, only another place to trap moisture.

Thanks guys there is the angle iron in there which is securing the battery down, I didn’t know how tight to clamp it, sadly I’m one of them people who overtightening things so wound the nuts down until I couldn’t move the battery anymore and left it at that is that right? Or do you guys frape them up tight?

Not had one for years, but a few times I found it had fallen off in the box.

Do not over do the tightening on the nuts holding the batt bar, just enough so the bar does not move is enough and do each nut the same amount of turns [ close as matters ] so as not to have excess load on one corner of the batt.

Seen too many of the angle iron bars run flat across the battery and nuts over tightened with washers to take up the slack, usually on the wrong size battery for the box! More common issue is the hooked end ripping out the locator slots in the floor of the battery box when they gone rusty. My previous TD5 DC had a nylon webbing strap with a plastic clasp riveted in which was much easier to use than the angle iron, didn’t rust either!
