Batteries and alarms?....Help please..........

Hello all;

A couple of simple (hopefully, and yes I've searched the forums, no real definative answers found, so thanks for any help) enquires;

I've a 110 300tdi; Batteries;

I'm looking to replace the batteries, what's the best for starting (having noticed others mention, tractor types - deep cycle - gel etc) and a 2nd for extras; it's got a split charge system, which seems to work and run lights/fridge and has a cut-out for the winch.

Internal alarm;

The flashing red LED light thingy doesn't flash? (I may have turned off the interior protection by mistake), the handbook tells you how to disarm it, BUT not how to arm it. Would this turn the flashing light off? Or has the light blown?

Thanks again for any help,
Cheers.

Can't help on the alarm, but batteries..

You need an 'ordinary' battery for starting - these are designed to supply loads of Amps for a short while without buckling plates internally. Run one of these flat and it's time for a new one. Which is where your split charge system should protect you.

For your systems, you need a 'deep cycle' or 'traction' battery. Designed with a completely different job in mind. You can flatten them, quite a lot of times, but you can't draw huge currents from them. The reason they're known as traction batteries is that they were historically designed for milk floats and fork lifts, and now finding a use as system batteries in cars and boats.

For the future, it's interesting. These traction batteries are nowhere near good enough for electric/hybrid cars because their output (without overheating) and recharge times are not acceptable.

What we leisure users need is a deep cycle battery that will deliver just a couple of Amps to power our laptops, led lighting etc.. and the winchers will go back to having another start battery which is more suited to deliver bursts of power and recharge quickly.

Optima seem to be an, albeit expensive, leader of the field. But, personally, I'd stick to a cheaper start battery.

Many thx for the comprehensive reply, excellent!

What do you think of Odyssey batteries? Are these over the top?

"But, personally, I'd stick to a cheaper start battery." Any suggestions?

Thanks agin, best regards.

it will only come back to haunt you

tractor batteries are king, if they are good enuf fer farmers they are good enuf for me

feel free to spray it red or yellow if you want to be poor and trendy

No experience of them, sorry.

As for starter batteries, I but whatever my local motor factor has in the right size, and then choose the one with the three year warranty.

Don't let the terms tractor battery and traction battery get confused, I've explained the latter, but a tractor battery is an f big battery for starting f big engines.

If you want to shop around, farm supply type places are good value in my experience.

Thx again, never thought the range was so vast, brought houses easier.

found a varta silver 800cca 5yr warranty £100, but still looking at tractor, numax etc,; odyssey £ 260 :0
