Hi
Advice recently from a specialist was front ball joint gaiters were split, they suggest replacing the whole ball joint and upper/lower gaiters.
'If' the ball joint is not in a state can I just replace the gaiters or do you need to replace the whole lot, price is quite different i suspect?

Thanks

Thanks James
These joints need a press tool to change them

Plus when you done replace your Drag link, steering box to passenger side control arm and then the Tie bar passenger to driver side control arm , it really improved you steering takes all the play out of a wobbly steering wheel

Thanks chaps, I dont have the tools for that but local specialist has quoted for replacement gaters if the condition of the ball joints are unaffected and still in good condition or full replacement. most of the underside components are becoming renewed so it should be like the day it came out the factory at this rate! :)

You could just replace the gaiters but i think the point is that with the effort taken to get to that point, it isn't all that much effort to go the extra mile and replace all four ball joints.
you can get the press kit online to do it for not too much money.

I am in a similar situation and have been similarly tempted. I have bought the kit and the four ball joints, plus the bearings for the driveshafts. But have a health problem which may preclude me from doing the whole job.
With the MOT looming, i am thinking of taking the gaiters off the ones I have bought and putting them on, as the car will then pass the MOT.
Then I can replace the whole ball joints when I get back to health. If my ball joints had been worn enough to show up on the MOT it would have been on the failure cert. As it was the state of the gaiters was just an advisory.

To me, I hate doing this sort of thing, it is teetering on the brink of bodgery, but needs must when the MOT is bearing down on you. I also have 5 other things I need to do to get through the MOT, so all is not fun. Age is a pain in the bum!

Be prepared for a visit from the three amigos after they've done it...
This would only happen if a hub bearing suddenly went, or a sensor came disconnected. This is just as likely to happen or not happen if the ball joints are disturbed. But this shouldn't happen if dye care is taken.
So I don't really get the point of your post.

My point is, I had the lower ball joint on one side and the gaiter on the other replaced one MoT apart and both times got the three lights on . Ended up replacing the ABS sensor on each side. They just seem to hate being disturbed.

So, you "got" them replaced.

In my case I would be doing the work. I have already replaced bearings on both sides, although at the rear, so I know how much care has to be taken. And in neither cased should the sensor have been disturbed. Maybe they didn't realise that the sensor wire has a connector so far away from the bearing, unlike the rear one. So instead of finding the fecking thing and disconnecting it there, they undid the sensor. And that sure as sh!t, would cause a problem!

Yes, I did 'get' them done. Most likely I had left the MoT late and I needed the car back sooner than it would take me get the parts and wait till the weekend to do it. Plus, it wasn't a job I fancied doing so I let them do it. A few videos I'd seen showed it was quite a struggle. One of the joys of going to work to earn money, you can pay someone else to do it, though If I'd taken it to a LR Indy for the MoT it might not have happened.
That aside, I don't really see why removing and replacing a sensor head should give a problem, you really can't get it in the wrong place and it's no different from replacing it with a new one, but in both cases it solved the problem.
