Ball Hone size selection - 300tdi

Greetings,
Has anyone ever used a ball hone tool to hone a 300tdi cylinder block prior to installation of new piston rings?
I understand the tools themselves are sold oversized so I should purchase for the bore size.
Would a 3.5" diameter ball hone be adequate? Or would a 3.75" be better?
Engine is standard and never before rebuilt.
