Hi all
ive noticed that recently, my 92' 200tdi defender 90 has got a really bad vibration in the steering wheel, but it varies where it happens. also, when i pull the handbrake up about half way, it get rid of the problem, which indicates something wrong with the handbrake drum.
All UJ's are new, all UJ bolts are tight, the main nut in the drum is tight, all wheelnuts are tight, and all the bearings are good. im not sure if there is a fault with the propshafts, but its expensive if new props dont solve the problem.
any help would be much appreciated,
cheers :D

Agreed = I have had issues too mate and if you like I'll let you know as I work through them. As James says, start with the rear prop off and diff lock on and go for a drive in the same speed range. Make sure you bolt on the handbrake drum with the four prop nuts and spacers if required - or it will fly off on the road - nasty!

Next try the rear prop off and the handbrake drum off too - if there is still vibration.

Next put all back on the rear and try with the front prop off in difflock if there is still vibration.

When either prop is off check the output flanges on the transfer box - they should not wobble at all and should be firmly in place.

Let us know how you get on?

Also check this thread out. Is the vibration in a band range of 20mph eg 50 -70 or 45 - 65? Your tyres might have lost weights at the front or rear. Have a look and see if any have fallen off - like mine have! Or were your tyres rotated recently? Any of them looking out of shape or deflated?

Wheel vibration at 50mph

remove one prop at time and run in diff lock to narrow are of problem
