hi

my poor old land rover has developed 2 small holes on the back axel ,on the diff housing ? i think ,the big round bit in the middle lol

how easy is it to replace the axel ? or can i bodge it ?

dont really want to take the second choise as its like paper in some places ,other than that its not bad underneath for a 30 year old ,chassis is fine

thanks

it depends on ware the holes are, in your diff. If they are in the casting or the thin steel cover at the back.

if its the casting the axle willl need replaceing, but if it is the steel cover at the back it is quite easy to replace.

The ones that are bolted on are salsbery axels where the diff unit is removed from the rear.

you can buy a replaceent cover and get it welded in shouldent be an expensive repar.

where are you based yeomanns, ive got series axle sitting on my drive in good nick, as for the repair, mine has gone on my disco and they want 200 quid to do it, apparentlyyou have to remove the diff and drop the axle off its mounts so that you can get a good weld on the top , hope this helps ;)

im in leoghton buzzard ,not far from milton keynes ,i dont really fancy stripping off the back axle ,sounds like a big job and i know there will be some nuts and bolts that will refuse to budge as usual and im in the middle of restoring a campervan ,im going to phone a place near dunstable monday to see how much they will charge to weld a new bit on
thanks for the offer
