Hi Guys, I'm in the process of renovating a 2A 1971, 88".
So far iv hit two problems. First while stripping the back axel I found that the diff cover was badly damaged. So ordered a replacement, cut the old one off and attempted the mig weld the new one on. To say it leaked would be an understatement. Mainly top and bottom. Small holes, but try as I may cannot fix . Anyone know how or where I can get it fixed in the Cannock area.
My second question is about tyers. Iv had the steel rims powder coated and was wondering if anyone can tell me the tyer size needed for the tyer replacement . The old tyers were 7.50 /16 but the cost of this type are expensive and I dought the car will go off road.
What's anyone thoughts on these 265/75_R16LT 112/109N OWL T L
NANKANG TYERS.
CHEERS AF.

The diff pans aren't that easy to weld on. I think because the old diff metal has been soaked in oil for years, and is hard to clean up.
Afraid I don't know any good welders around Cannock.

With the tyres, I think Metric sizes are all wrong on a Series, and 265 wide is too wide, and not very tall.
I would stay with the 7.50x16s, or at least try and get a straight 205 or 225 rather than a profile tyre.

That's for the advice it was a worry that I may end up with tyers that won't fit. And as regard the Axel probably end up getting another.
But thanks again for the advice.

The 265s will fit, but they will reduce your turning circle, make your steering heavier, and look wrong.

Getting a new axle may be a bit drastic. Try getting another pan, cleaning up the rear face of the axle better, using a flap wheel or a grinder with caution. And practice welding a bit more before trying again.

I changed my 84 rear axle as I found pinholes in the round area toward the hub, wasn’t cheap but very happy with it , if yours is structurally ok apart from the pan very likely there will be local fabricators shops, perhaps mobile fabricators not too far away, I tested mine with a hammer and nail and in places was paper thin. Mine had some repairs also on diff pan where it had been welded up and coated in expoxy metal to give a smooth finish And help stop leaks

Hi thanks again for the advice on tyer size. If 265 are to big what size should I be looking for?
As you've gathered I know very little about this subject. Any help would be appreciated. Just want a tyer that won't break the bank.. Don't particularly want a mud tyer.
Cheers

I’m not much better on tyres either so recommend having a search on this forum

there are 3 considerations first the 7.5r x 16 tyres are quite a tall tyre ,
* when you change the overall diameter of the Tyre then the speedo accuracy will change
* if you increase the width of Tyre then turning circle can increase and make it harder to steer
* the original wheels suit tubed tyres and modern tyres usually tubeless so need to ensure the tyre works with wheel , if you have a search then you might find what tyres best suits the wheel

the nearest metric equivalent of 7.5 r 16 is below but need to check if these tubeless will fit the rims , it’s been asked before and the answers can be found by a search I’m sure

I find 7.50x16s work well. But a straight 205 or 225 isn't much different. Profile tyres those sizes are narrow, but not very tall.

Hi Guys, yes still at it my 1971 2a is still in bits. At present I'm rebuilding the diff. Al the bearing have been changed. Iv just set the pinion height. Using the original shims. The height I now have is 38.42mm the manual said it should be 38..1mm so I'm. 41mm low. Would this be within its tolerance. Any help would be appreciated.
