Hello all,

Was doing my swivel joint today along with all seals etc to get it all up to spec. I am having trouble with the oil seal for the axle case. The original looked alright but I bought new so went with replacing for peace of mind. I was replacing with a corteco seal after removing the gaco one, first sights it seemed a lot thinner and crappier although it’s classed as OEM. Anyway when trying to install I managed to ruin two even though I was following the correct installation methods, mainly with distortion to the seal. I found the casing seemed to drag the edges of the seal causing them to tear up even with a bit of gear oil to help. It seemed the seal was almost too large for the seating. My Land Rover is an 88 late model series 3 with I was told a 109 front axle but with research I think this was stock on the later series 3? (Large drum brake) I am wondering did I have the correct seal or am I just installing wrong? In the pics the thicker gaco seal is on the left

also does anyone know the part number for the bolts that secure the swivel seal to the housing?

thanks!

[GALLERY=] thanks for the reply, on the bag it says 217400G 15510051 so assuming they are the correct ones? Like I said it’s almost as if the seal was a hair too large and compared to the one that came out, the old one was thick and ridged and coreteco seemed a lot thinner and weaker. I am going to check the housing for burrs or anything other obstructions that may be causing damage but other than that I am a bit lost. Do they still make the geco ones?
