hi all I seem to be having a fair bit of trouble removing th balls on me defender 90 front axle, I've tried one bolt and that's rounded, any tips or tricks to removing them?

If it's the bolts that hold the hub and everything onto the end if the axle use a (I think) 14mm ring spanner bi hex hold the ring on with your thumb and whack the other end with a lump hammer

1/2" multipoint is a perfect fit.
You want to listen to that Flossie dude, I had them bolts that appeared rounded and a 1/2" AF multipoint spanner undid them and didnt slip. Replace with new and put that oddball spanner/ socket somewhere safe cos you'll need it again.

@Flossie , not sure why you can get 1/2 AF on yours, I can only get 14mm spanner on mine. Admittedly they are 300tdi disco axles.

1/2 AF is just too small.

Did the size change at some point?

Cheers

Ohh..dunno ...maybe...
The 1/2" fits very snuggly on new bolts but on the vehicle, and a bit rusty, the spanner/socket needs tapping on and prising off but it won't slip and even worked on bolts that had been butchered slightly.
Mines an 86 front axle and a 93 rear but the bolts were the same head size on both. Metric just slipped on mine and 1/2" appeared too small but does tap on and must be a multipoint, normal 1/2" won't fit, same with the socket, must be multipoint and tapped on.

I suppose the question is, are these the bolts the OP is asking about.
Bolt number which is shown to go thru the chalice base into the axle. As mine are 14mm bihex.

Two things have emerged...
Firstly , I was thinking of the caliper bolts in regard to the 1/2" multipoint so that's my bad:rolleyes:
Secondly, I've had a glance underneath and the bolts holding the chalice to the axle tube are bi hex on mine BUT don't know if they are 1/2" or not without checking.

Thanks for the replies, my dad is bringing the gas cutters home, hopefully they should come out when I heat them up a bit, I'll keep you all update, thanks again
