Hi guys,

I have a 97 300tdi disco. It's been going fine for a while but about a week ago I gave it a few too many revs whilst accelerating (I know...) and the auxiliary/serpentine belt shredded. I limped back home where it sat for a while before I got around to looking at it. The water pump pulley was wobbley and had sheared. I replaced the pump and pulley along with the belt and took it out when the belt came off again after about 5 miles. I think it's just a coincidence that i turned the heater on at the same time.

Does anyone have any idea why this could be happening?

had exactly the same problem.....without the overreving,
changed belt...shredded
Changed pump (slight wobble) and belt....shredded
Changed belt and pulley bearing......shredded
Changed belt and whole pulley arrangement.......perfect
.....now only have a canary loose in the engine bay somewhere....I can live with that

Check the power steering pump pulley, see if it pulls torwards you?
Mine did by about 5mm and caused the belt shredding, new pump fixed it.

No problem Priscilla, it's saved me too. Now just need to sort the airlock in my coolant system out. Oh the joys...

sounds like you may have cooked the head / gasket / both

When I replaced my water pump with a non oem part the pulley alignment was slightly off causing the belt to jump.

Which make is your new pump?
