The automatic gearbox on my 2000 Disco TD5 today when I was driving moved the selector down from drive to 3 but the flasing light was on still in the drive position and wherever I moved the selector the light would not move or go off.

I stopped the vehicle turned off the ignition and re started it and the selector worked and there was no flasing light, plus the car would pull whereas before felt as though the torque convertor was or maybe is on the way out

It has happened once before when I was accelerating in 3 and then at 80ks moved the selector forward to Drive to change up and the car would not change up but the selector red light in drive started flashing, so I then moved the selector back to 3 and accelerated to a higher speed and then moved the selector up to drive and it then changed up

Any ideas would be helpful, thanks in advance

Sounds like you might have the XYZ switch problem. If I'm right it will need either adjusting or replacing.

If that is all it is I will be well pleased, are there any special L/R tools required to change the XYZ switch ?

I'm sorry, it's not a job I've had to do, so I can't add any further info from my own experience.

However, it is a well-known problem, so may I suggest you do a search on the forum for "xyz switch"

Yes, you can do it yourself, and yes there is a special setting tool but you can with care set it up yourself. The part is actually known as a 'gear position selector switch' and you will get some 'you want what?' if you ask for an XYZ switch, I know I called Paddocks yesterday who said it. It is apparently a Main Stealer supplied item about £130 ish and a right barsteward to fit because of the difficult access. It recommends you remove the exhaust front pipe but it can be done with this in place. i will be doing this on the weekend too. The fault is usually caused by the aircon condense drain which is conveniently placed above this switch, so water and electrics.....not a great mix. Extend the drain pipe so that the water thus misses the new switch and it should last a lifetime. I wish.

piece of **** to fit , easy , i have one if you want it , make me a offer i will post it ! regard andy 07808727666 any questions

Wished I had known that, I just bought a new one from Guy Salmon, £132ppp and fitted it tonight, As previously stated they are easy to fit but becarefull about the heat from the auto box sump, its fecking hot. The exhaust cooled down very quickly, the oil in the auto box does not. The adjustment side of the fitment is easy as the switch does not need to move much to sort out the finite neutral position. Driving now is now relaxed and hopefully no more lights flashing.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but can oldzed (or anyone else) tell me how easy the switch was to adjust? Is it adjusted by movement while on the box, or is it a take out, adjust and refit?

Thanks, Jock

when you say adjust , why does it need to be adjusted , the only adjustment that i found was when i replaced the switch the car would not start even though it said i was in park , so all i had to do was make sure that the long rod that switch clamps to was in the wright place , only had to move very slightly and re clamp and away it went . hope this helps
