Hi everybody, just started in this forum, here goes.
I have a 51' plate auto TD4 Landy and the gearbox failed, its only done 51k miles and is 6 years old, surely it should last longer than that. it cost me 2000 pounds to have it replaced and when i questioned what Landrover will do to support this i was told they will do nothing. anybody had a similar experience?

Thanks for reading this and head for the hills

it depends on what sort of work its done - if it has been used for towing then an extra cooler is almost mandatory. Mine was slipping in 3rd when i got rid - I was quoted £1800 including cooler tho - so yu might get a betta price elsewhere.

Wow I can input on this one!!!

Well just had two problems on my auto 51 plate td4 113k

Symptom:- Gearbox slipping in top end gears 3rd fourth fifth

Solution and fix:- Main piston in gearbox cracked that puts pressure (or lack of it in my case) on the clutch...apparently it has a clutch aswell!!!

Cost:- £700 to fix from an indepent gearbox specialist in Boscombe Bournemouth who I would definatly recommend, luckily enough this was covered by an aftermarket warrenty they did not even quibble on payout

Then two weeks later ........

Symptom:- gears change jerked in every gear and got progressivley worse

Solution & Fix :- Solenoids in the gearbox required replacing 3 of them apparently they have five in total

Cost £225 not a warrenty Item.. dam and blast

I have not had a problem since apparently...... the piston is a Landrover design fault and the second is just unlucky! it now drives like an absolute dream!

Conclusion:----Dont buy new get it refurbed by a good specialist who knows what hes doing!!! Hope it helps you auto lovers out there:cool:

Where is the cooler fitted?
My 2003 TD4 Auto had the tow bar removed by the previous owner. So I am just wondering if the cooler is still there, or was ever fitted.

Just asking cos I have intermittant whirring/whining noise coming from the transmission area(only 38,000 miles), more noticeable at slow speed in low gears.

If they have been towing a house with no cooler, this might explain the noise???

Isn't the autobox a JATCO ? Is LR putting things of their own in these boxes then ???

Oh dear! good one, yes the gearbox is a Jatco, its a common fault with the landrover freelander gearbox and on other vehicles that share the same gearbox.
