After a whole heap of manual 90's and a few Disco's, I'm looking for an automatic 90 TD5. I know LR never made one, but a few have been converted by Ashcrofts and others using 300Tdi gearboxes. My wife has a knackered left leg and I find the manual so s l o w to shift.. If anyone knows of one, please drop me a line foxhole4bb at AOL.com Please modify address to read correctly, it's done to stop those programs which search for email addresses to bombard with spam. Ta.

Thanks for the replies so far.. I'll try Widget.. I know there are several V8 autos about, a guy in my 4WD club had one for trialling which won everything.. My other option was to make the clutch lighter, but I've no idea how to do that..

Buryas Bridge Garage in Cornwall offered it as a conversion and I asked them for a price when they they were fitting a new 300TDi & R380 into my 90 but it was going to cost another £3K over & above the already considerable £6.5K cost for the retro-fit kit. Meant to work very well and I wish I had gone for it but it was a lot of money and I couldn't really justify it on a vehicle which does so few miles (also my wife refuses to drive auto's and she drives the LR now & again). For a lighter clutch just fit a remote servo on the hydraulic line.

Am willing to pass on experience of service provided by above dealer fitting retrofit kit, won't post on open forum but will respond to serious queries.

Thanks Litch.. A good idea about the remote servo. Ermm, I need to think about that one.. I got a quick reply from Widget, his is a 50th Anniversary V8..

No probs. How about a 50th with LPG?

Cost you ITRO of 12-14k, but will have a significantly better residual value than a converted Td5 perhaps.

I'm a frayed knot. (I'm strung out today..) I used to have a 90 V8 trialler with LPG and the tank took up too much load space.., like, ALL the load space. Also, her outdoors (she has horses so I never see her in daylight) doesn't want an LPG tank behind her bum.. Spoke to her about the lighter clutch idea but it's not only the pushing she has problems with, but also lifting her left foot up. She manages okay when she kicks me, though.. (joke) Her left knee pulled apart when skiing 17 years ago and she broke her ankle very badly when a horse knocked her over and trampled her last November. Real dogs breakfast. Someone suggested over on the LRO forum that I try to find an alternative supplier as the only real sticking point for us is the cost of the conversion. I had a nice 90 TD5 County in mind but spending another 50% of the vehicles worth on it is daunting. Ashcrofts can do the job using a Disco 2 box and a hydraulic shifter for £3500 + vat. They've done work twice for me and I have no complaints whatsoever about them, it's just down to the cost. It looks like Hobsons Choice, though.

Some track racing guys build their own brake assemblies starting with one or two after-market master brake cylinders. If you can locate a master brake cylinder with a larger diameter than your current clutch master cylinder you have the crucial hardware sorted.

Yes, a good idea, thanks. After having speaks with herself, she frowned at making the clutch lighter. The problem she has is not only pushing the pedal, but also lifting her foot up onto it. I didn't see this at first, but a 90 is not like a car where you don't have to lift your heel off the floor, you do have to lift your foot to plonk it on the pedal, especially if you only take size 5's!
