Autobox oil change

Next on the list is a transmission service i intend to change oil in auto box and transfer and both axles. What I'm unsure of is how much atf fluid to buy as I'm aware you can't get it all out. I have the new filter/gasket how much atf fluid should i buy as i don't want loads hanging around in the garage!

Do you know when it was last changed, and how many miles the box has done?

If not, dont change it!!!!!

I'd agree with Fett on it not being essential, in the situation where you have not problems with it. Disturbing it could be the start of problems...

Having said that, you'll need about 7 litres to change, if you do have some left over you can dispose of it at you local recycling centre, or some councils will collect during the fortnightly collection.

Having the reiainder from two 4.5 litre containers is good for topping up box or power steering.

Funny I was going to do mine as well this week, advised by a few Range Rover garages near if its OK no need to touch it

Oh sorry forgot to mention I was told about 11 ltrs.

If you do decide to do it, it can turn out to be a very messy job as the 2002 gearbox doesnt have a dipstick. To fill the box its a question of fill till it overflows from the filler hole, with the engine running. Then go through all of the gears, and recheck level by topping up until it overflows again.

Got to say I agree if all working well leave alone I changed fluid in box and it went bonkers for about 50 miles stuck in gear then sorted itself left alone ever since but did have a howling diff and when I looked it was dry so even stevebs suppose.

i changed the filter and fluid in my p38 auto,the box was taking a bit longer than normal to change gear.i used lucas oil atf for mine and it was the best thing i could have done for it.changes up/down as smooth as can be now.

Cost me a 1k rebuild as it disturbed the age old ****e in there form years of unchanged fluid.

If I dont know the history I will never change the fluid in a box again as it a question of 1k now or 1k later! and I prefer the later!

i am running 2 p38 v8s and a v8 defender, i change my auto trans and transfer box fluid once a year along with front and rear axle oil and enjoy silky smooth geabox changes .
buy my oils in 25ltr drums, i feel prevention is better than cure
thats just my opinion may not be the way to go depends on how many miles
your box has done and if its had a hard life
alot of problems with auto boxes can be associated with the quality of the fluid or lack of
if you do alot of towing the oil can loose its body from getting hot and go brown instead of a nice cherry red

Now i'm unsure what to do! i have had the car about 2 years and it's never been changed i have no record of it ever being done the car has done 93k i was going to change filter as well the box shifts great a little sluggish when very cold no other problems just tryig to prevent them?

my 2 v8 rangies the 1 has done 52000 miles 2000 m/year 4.6 30th aniversary
the other has done 17000 miles 1998 4.6 autobiography they both get the same treatment as well as my defender as in my earlier reply
when ever i buy another vehicle one of the first jobs i do is a full service
so you know its definetely been done.
me personally i would do it

I thought that , and went in knowing all the facts and it cost me big time!

Bought my P38 at 172k and had the auto box oil changed as a matter of course. I would do it too.
