I am not OP altho I do suffer with the same sort of symptoms so
No it does not slam into gear
Old fluid was not too bad, a bit brown but no smell of burnt
Colour, see above
ETC? Nothing else to report other than that mentioned.
OP I am not trying to hijack your thread, I just feel that we both need answers to similar symptoms, but if you want me to sod off I will!

Haha no it’s ok, we do seem to have a similar issue, as for mine, fluid didn’t smell much different from new atf, browny red colour not burnt, changes gear very smooth if being gentle with throttle, or the usual hard change if booting it, same as any auto iv drove, no noise at all from gear changes.

Stan, completely understand what you say about connecting to a car or mechanics off it, I looked myself at disco 1s but just so hard to get one round here that’s not been used on pay and play sites or not completely rotten so focused on disco 2s, there loads I’d like to do to mine such as new intercooler hoses, new brakes all round, bit of a judder under hard braking due to disc, replace black plastic arch trims etc but with first baby due April/ may only essentiall jobs are being spent on.

Typically he is a bit of a suck through the teeth and "this'll cot yuh" merchant but underneath it all, once you remind him you do all (or most of) your own work and talk about scrapping it if it's going to cost too much, he gets reasonable. He did show me the leavings of one he'd cut off and replaced, that he'd already patched twice, quite shocking where part of it just snapped off!
He also tried to flog me 5 wheels and tyres with General Grabbers on for £125 and also mentioned he had a rear seat, the big one, exactly the same colour and material, to replace the one that needs fixing cos the back on it won't lock into place, until I take it apart and fix it.
So I'll take the tow bar off and give it to him fairly soon and meanwhile try to fix all the other stupid little things like replace the two rear shocks and fix the SRS light, which should be just a connection under the seat, as it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. This is what it has been in the past, but I cross fingers really hard on anything electrical on these trucks.
Mechanic was saying TD5s aren't worth very much at all scrap, about the same for the engine as a 300tdi and LESS than a 200tdi which he lauds as he says they are bombproof. I've heard others say that too but I do not know what makes them better.
Anyway
Cheers Stan
300 is basically a 200 but refined,i prefer the 300 from a design perspective but they do suffer more from overheating head gasket issues due in no small part to rad design

I like a good TD5 myself ;)

A 300 with the Auto behind it is, well :confused:
Yeah, one thing I should have said maybe is that my 300tdi is a slightly breathed upon version and manual, whereas my TD5 is a bog standard auto. Therefore, I agree that the TD5 is probably a better auto than a 300tdi would be.
But still, I prefer the 300tdi cos it is more economical and it gives me as much performance as I want, which is not much as if I want to go fast I drive a different car completely. Which I would not take to a green lane or a pay and play site!
Horses for courses.
To me the only point in a performance version of an off-road vehicle is to tow more effortlessly or to compete in the Paris-Dakar, and I think that making Range Rovers and other LR vehicles into perfomance brutes is like trying to take a sumo wrestler and make him run the mile in under 4 minutes. Not saying it's impossible, just saying, really what is the point?
But then I am not the man trying to sell the cars nor am I an "influencer"
I feel it is a shame that LR and many other off-road enabled vehicles seem to have lost their way. It attracts dreadful press especially when urban yummy mummies INSIST they have to have them to take their precious offspring to school as it is "safer". "Chelsea-tractors", "Gas-guzlers" pick your own nasty nickname. It doesn't do the image of the marque any good. and yes I know that if it wasn't for people buying them, we wouldn't have them, just think there is a point at which things get out of hand. And I think the guy who wants to build the "Grenadier" has the right idea. Maybe we'd see more farmers buying a brit product than a Jap one. Then using it for what it was originally intended.

And yes, I do have three of them, so you might want to call me a hypocrite, but I only bought them to do heavy long diastance towing duty, sometimes in rough conditions and if I ever stop doing that I might well get rid of them. PS I only drive one at a time!

Oops, seems like I am back in rant mode again! Sorry folks!

I agree LR post 2004 "D2 production ended" is a red zone for me personally.
The later cars lack the countyset look of the originals.

Range rovers of old 1970-2002 "P38 included" were built to tow and go offroad, the latter ones were built with the city in mind.
Discovery is another a great car. ;) :)

D1,D2,D3, are nice 4x4's, however the latter are a little too complicated for my taste.

for me the d2 and td5 defender are the last of a long line of 4x4s ,the newer models are no doubt great vehicles performance and comfort but too much suv

Definitely agree there about later land rovers being on the school run and never seeing off road, me personally I got mine as Iv always liked them but also go shooting, some of my customers are farmers with very poor tracks to get down so it makes sense, though talking to farmers they don’t entertain LR anymore most all in l200s or ford rangers, though one I know had a new ranger and had nothing but trouble. Regards to the speed of them I like the ability of the td5 to keep up with trafic, I don’t want a fast car but not one so slow it’s a danger or annoyance say the MOD with there 2.5na diesel with its 60odd HP.

No it's the thing that looks like an old Bentley, may even be red, I'll have a look on t'internet for it.
Looked, can't find it.
Flipping annoying.
I have seen a Morry thou on one and also there was a kit you could get to convert a Rangie into a Jeep copy.:rolleyes::oops:
You see this sort of thing at Rod and Custom shows , or Kit car shows, but the one we are on about I've only ever seen in a magazine, but I saw it more than once so it must have belonged to one of the writers.
Land Rover Owner, or Land Rover Monthly maybe.
Edited!
