Hi recently had weird noises coming from my discovery td5 auto gearbox when putting it in reverse had it on the ramp to find there was a crack halfway round the bell housing of the gearbox.couldnt find a second hand bell housing from anywhere so had it alloy welded and re fitted but since it has been back on the road it has a slight vibrating noise when picking up speed and after 2 weeks after the repair it would only drive in reverse not in 1st,2nd,3rd or drive but if i put it in drive or 1st,2nd,3rd and rev the engine it seems to jump into gear then drives ok.the problem seems to happen when parked stationary put it into reverse move back a touch then select drive its as though its in neutural still but doesnt always do it so its like a hit and miss problem!?:confused::confused::confused:

Do a selector cable check/adjustment first... if the cable is not fixed well it might put some pressure on the gearbox lever and disturb things. Here is the procedure:

Check
1.
Position vehicle on ramp.
2. Select position 'P'.
3. Loosen selector cable trunnion nut.
4. Ensure that gearbox selector lever is in 'P'
position, (fully forward) and tighten trunnion
nut.
5. Lower ramp.
