Auto Gearbox Oil Overflow Plug

Right people, following on from Mings thread, does anyone know the where abouts of the overflow plug on an auto gearbox?
I think you have to remove this overflow plug to allow oil to flow out when topping up or replacing the oil in the gearbox. When the oil flows out it's had enough oil.
Description would be good.
Photos would be great.
Some one to do it for me, free, would be amazing :rolleyes:
 
well if you want it doing free and your car not that old ie 01my onwards phone your local lr dealer and see if your auto box speed sensor recall is still outstanding, if so you will get a new sensor and a new oil refill, thats if they dont have a cut off date for that repair, definately worth a go.
 
Just sent a request to my dealer to check whether this recall action is also valid for Belgium. Curious to see 1. if I get an answer, and 2. if it is applicable for Belgium as well.

Mine is a X 2000 model and it has had ALL recalls carried out according to LR.
I'm pretty sure it needs only a top of oil but I do need to locate this overflow plug. Even if some one knows if it's at the front or back of the gearbox would help. Probably have to remove the battery and battery tray too to get a better look.
How many sensors does the auto bix have? Is it a DIY job or gearbox apart job?

My mailbox empty from dealer's response, so question 1. is negative and thus question 2. is a big ?

I doubt whether I will get an answer at all.

 
Should have told em you were thinking of buying a top of the range ,RANGE ROVER ,might have got a huge responce. . .:D
 
over flow plug is located at bottom of the box, it will be a 4mm allen screw, it sits right alongside the selector cable, oil should be 30-35 degrees celcius, which would be hard to know what its at without the use of T4 so from cold run engine for about 2-3 mins and go through gears a few times this should be adequate to get it to that temp, then select neutral undo the allen screw if nothing comes out top up with new oil, this is done by removing the rubber bung fron top/front of box ,hope this helps
only the undertray will need removing to carry out this procedure.

and if you are for any reason going to drain the old oil ENSURE you undo the correct drain plug this is located at the bottom of the box 21mm head bolt (there is a similar bolt on the box that hold a drive chain tensioner in place and should not be removed so if in dought get your dealer to do it )
 
Thanks LR Guy. I have to remove the undertray to locate the said overflow plug. There was me thinking I could do it all from the top of the engine bay.
I only want to check the oil level and top up if necesary, at 38k miles I would like to think the oil doesn't need changing....does it? Not sure how often gearbox oil needs doing?
 
dont think it will need checking at that milage im sure the service interval time is 60k, unless you have gear changing or noise issues probably best to leave it but if you feel up to checking it go ahead :)
 
I'm having gear change problems :(
All ok up to 3rd gear but changing from 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th it seems to over rev or slip before selecting the gear properly, especially when accelerating hard.
I was told a lack or oil preasure could cause this so thought I'd check it out. No sign of oil leaks though. I'm confused.

Do as i said in my thread, and measure how much in there should be 4ltrs or get 4ltrs new, will cost yer £40 and dont forget a new washer ,but hey at least you will know its not oil related , the job itself is simple the only pain is drilling out the stupid rivets [a good time to mod it for quick undo next time or oil change] go for it . . .:)
 
Oh yeah, rivets, that would be why I haven't done the job sooner. Stupid rivets. How many rivets hold the undertray in place?
I did think about changing the oil Ming but opted against that approach for some reason.

Er yep its a real pain , bout 7 ,2 bolts on the back ,2 stupid rivets each side, and here is the do yer head in bit, bout 3 blind rivets on the front held with a ally re enforcing strip, i didn't get all techy with this bit, just got a sharp cold chisel,and smashed them orft [felt good after] it twas then i decided this was totally ****e design, so bought some stainless bolts and wing nuts wiv the lock threads inside ,now i can take the stupid thing of in a min, some say this weakens the design of the cowel , again i say [fishy wifes tales] worth doing if like myself ya don't trust others to fix ya motor . . .:) :) :)
 
you dont need to drill out any rivets, the rivets just hold the brackets on to the plastic, all you need to do is remove the two 10mm bolts on the other end of bracket, then remove all the 13mm bolts

Ok might have to bite the bullet on this one,as yes l r guy is correct ,but in my own defence,there is a big difference tween working in a garage with a lift, and slapping ya motor on jacks outside, and if like myself youve done it ,then you will understand my logic. . .:eek:

And, more importantly, you do rule the planet Zog as well as the universe so technically we are all at your mercy ;)

Well thanks Mark,did feel a tad bit embarrassed,as ruler of many planets,the freelander is a mere toy to myself,should have known better. . .:)
