Howdy,

I have had a good search about, as need to remove my centre console to free up the diff lock, and all the guides are for a manual, so are there any instructions to remove the auto gear stick surround so I can get out the console? I am guessing it will be simple but dont want to yank it off, in case that's not really the best way......

Any help appreciated....and I hope no-one brings up a link to a thread showing exactly what I want, as I have trawled through loads of threads regarding diff lock (spent most of the day reading through them all), so if you do, I apologise now.....

Cheers

no need to remove the stick just the surrounding ring and you can get at everything else from there.

did the diff lock on my old 300tdi auto the same way. you will need to remove the centre console and handbrake but the gear selector is not connected to these

Don't you need to remove the handle etc on the lever to actually get the console over it and off, so you can work on the diff lock?

As on the manual, you just unscrew the top of the lever to make it a metal pole....

nope, the gearshift on an auto is not connected to the centre console. If you remove the gearshift surround you will see (black plastic ring, comes away with a little force).

take the centre console screws out disconnect handbrake and window switches etc and move the console out of the way.

drill the rivets out of the difflock lever (you will need self tappers/rivets to put it back) and go from there.

mine took a lot of work but once done greased it all up and worked fine :)

Ok, cool, thanks for that.

I just didn't want to start on it, and then find I have to remove the lever not knowing how to.

Right, will get started on stripping out the console to see how seized the levers are......another cold night on the drive

Thanks for the offer - might just be able to take you up on that, as the Mrs has now decided to go shopping at teesside park, so best laid plans and all......now moved to another night!

took me 1 hour to sort the difflock from the top, it was well siezed, needed a club hammer to free it and loads of Plus gas. works fine now realy smooth.

looks like will take me longer stripping out the console then......

Can you remember what size self tappers are needed to replace the rivets that are drilled out?
