I have a strange noise, a cherpping or rubbing noise coming from my 300TDI at present.
At first I thought it may be a stone trapped in a wheel or brake however I'm not convinced as it's not there all the time when driving.

What's happening is no noise while stationery, the noise only occurs when moving and putting the engine under load (acceleraiting), no noise when cruising or free wheeling.

So I checked the auto oil level tonight, engine running and neutral selected.
There is oil in there but as I don't have a book I'm not sure which mark the oil level is meant to be at.
Should it be at the higher of the 2 holes in the dipstick or should the oil level be at the notch in the side of the dipstick a few inches higher up??

The level should be checked with the engine and box cold. There are two marks on the dip stick, the level should be between the two. From what I recall it takes very little oil for it to move from the lower to the upper mark

When I had auto box problems last year I needed similar info & this was posted on my thread :

"The correct method is
Start engine , then handbrake on , foot on brake, engine at idle, run through all gears and finish in park . Leave engine idling , remove dipstick, wipe reinsert and then withdraw. This will give the reading, it will vary according to how hot gearbox oil is. There are usually marks for level with eng hot and with cold engine"

Ok the strange noise had nothing to do with the auto box it was in fact a collapsed universal joint on the front prop shaft at the gearbox end.

where is the auto box dipstick, i have a 2003 model, i thought you had to do the level by the level plug on the box, a bit scary being under the motor when someone puts it in gear to check level

I take it the prop shaft had plenty of play in it then, as my V8 sounds like that, I put it down to a exhaust gasket, will have to have a closer look.

Not really as it was only worn on 2 lugs/pins the other 2 are perfect which is why I missed it earlier. The 2 worn ones must be down by 25% or more and the needle rollers? Well, there's no cup let never mind rollers:eek:!

On Disco1's they had a dipstick, on Disco2 like yours, there is no dipstick, the level is established via the fill hole on the box as you said. Unfortunately
