Auto clunking on overrun

My 300Tdi auto has a loud metallic clunking on the overrun. Presumably transmission related but is there any obvious area I should be checking first.

Also got a very irritating rattle from the dashboard between 2000 - 3000 rpm. Sounds something like a loose captive nut. Anyone know anything easy without pulling the dash out??
