Hi

I have a 1995 P39 4.0, with a fault on the auto box. Basically it does not 'kick down' anymore. The box works perfectly in evey other way, I have had the oil and strainer/filter thing changed with no inprovement.

There is no warning lights on display (well not for the box)

Any suggestions, mind you my MPG has improved.

Cheers Ian

Hi If you speak to any autobox repair man he will tell you kicking down is what ruins an autobox so it could be a good thing. have you tried the cable?

"have you tried the cable?"

Not being a Range Rover or come to it any kind of expert, which cable ?

The box works perfectly in every way inc manual change downs, it just kickdown that does'nt work.

Thanks Ian

Ooh, I wish mine was like that. Mine was too ready to kick down so I slackened off the cable going to the autobox and it's now very reluctant to kick down, which as you've found out is good for MPG. I don't like the vehicle kicking down, I just select the gear I want when needing more power then slip it back into D - semi-auto effectively. Take a look at the throttle body and you'll see the throttle cable on a rotary plate and there should be another cable coming off it going into a metal bracket with adjustable threaded tube on it near you AFM. This is the kickdown cable, to tighten it up and make it more readily kickdown, undo the 2 10mm locking nuts (one on either side of the bracket) and adjust so that there is less tube on the engine side of the adjuster than the wing side. ONLY adjust it a few mm at a time otherwise you could end up stuck in first gear...
