Auto box oil change???????????

I've just changed the auto box oil and filter on my 1999 DSE, in the handbook it says it should take 9.7 ltrs when changed but when i dropped the sump changed the filter and topped it back up it only took 3 ltrs! is this right? there's no dipstick and has to be re-filled by the top up plug so i assume it just gets filled until it runs out.
Have i done this right, i don't want to be running around with not enough oil.

you normally get 4.5 ish litres back in which is okay as you cant drain entire system only whats in sump ,

The 9.7 litres is the engine oil, not gearbox oil.

As James has mentioned you only get about 4 odd litres that is in the sump this is why when I pick up a new car I change the gearbox oil twice in the first month and then every year rather than waiting for the recommended interval. Lets face it, 4 lts of dextron is cheap for peace of mind.

OK thanks for the replies, i guess my 3 + ltrs were ok then, still a bit of a bugger cos i bought 10 ltrs of oil.
i suppose the only way to change the whole system is to just keep changing the oil for a few months, as it happens i have some spare oil hanging around.

it is but if it hasnt been changed for a while ,the high detergent oil can cause problems as it cleans parts so gradual change is best,and if you do it regular after it only needs partial change

OK i think i'll just change it every few months and the filter once a year, it was very brown so i'm guessing it's been a while even though it does have a full service history.

When the car is cold, idle the engine and run the gear selector a couple of times through all the gears (whilst stationary), then select Park and top up again with the engine idling.

I normally do this the morning after changing my transmission fluid, and generally takes an extra litre or so at least.

Also, since you have some spare oil, it's worth changing the fluid in the Transfer Box - quick and easy to change, and only takes a couple of litres.
