been told today that a auto gearbox on a TD5, until warm will not work smoothly, ie acts like fuel starvation, has some sort of relief valve so you can not drive it hard until it warms up, have anybody else heard of this?
car starts to judder like fuel starvation at around 4000rpm,
as much to say! until warm do not try to race away from traffic lights etc,

I must have had at least 8 TD5 autos through my hands in the last three years and I can assure that this suggestion is utter and complete hogwash.

A correctly serviced and operated TD5 auto will work perfectly smoothly from cold.

However, there is an electronic interface between engine and transmission ECu's which retards gears changes until the engine warms through. The idea is that the gearbox stays in relatively lower gears to aid engine warm-up. This has no effect on smoothness however and is only very short-term.
