Disco 1 Auto box gear stick loose and not selecting gears

As the title says, I have a 1997 300 TDI auto and last night the gear stick went loose as if it's disconnected from the gearbox, as I cannot select any gears.

It starts and engine runs and revs quite happily.

I think it must be stuck in park as it will not move and trying to tow it, the wheels are locked.

Is there a cable or something that attaches to the gear lever that might have failed, or something more serious?

Yes.

Look underneath to see if its connected right hand side of the box (looking at the front of the car) If you take an adjustable you could move it manually to get it into N so it can be towed/moved.

Does the dash/gearstick light show what gear its in?

If its still connected then you will have to look at the gearstick end.

Nothing showing on the gear stick, and D1 doesn't have any display on the dash.

Will have a better look at the weekend then with a bag of spanners, as luckily this one is used to cut the field so it's not abandoned on a road somewhere
