auto box 300tdi oil level

is there some secret to reading the oil level on the dipstick from the auto box says read it cold in neutral but cant seem to get a decent reading on dipstick

The precedure is to start with a cold engine, assuming it's a TDi not a TD5:

1. Start the engine, take out the dipstick and clean it;

2. Using the gear lever, go through every position from front to back (P to 1) pausing at each position for a couple of seconds, then go back to P;

3 Then take the dipstick and dip the level - it should be between the two marks. It must not be over high and it should not be below the low mark. It take 0.25ltrs to go from low to high.
