Attempted Theft

Evening everyone, there was an attempt to steal my series 3 109 last night, came back from my dog walk and noticed the passenger door was slightly ajar(its parked across the road) and when I looked inside, the steering wheel bar lock had been smashed off. No damage to the ignition. Happened in Basildon in Essex, look out if you are local and own one.

Do you have a driveway to park her on?

iI suggest a better quality steering lock, maybe even worth pulling the king lead every time you park her up to help lower the chances of someone hotwiring it.

Might even be worth getting a steering wheel with a quick release boss and removing the wheel everytime you park, making sure to kerb the wheels beforehand.

Lucky man. I use a Disklock, which I hope is a bit harder to get off, at least without a grinder. I gather that some people have welded extra metal on them.

There's a local Defender that I've just noticed has it's wheel taken off when it's on the drive.

A decent alarm system would be my first line of defence, so sounding as soon as the door was opened.

Make sure the alarm has vibration sensing and interior movement detection anorl.

DISKLOK 32 seconds with a battery grinder and its gone.....

Shire Fabrications are about the best around IMO*.... Combine with a cut out to the ECU, and an alarm with a decent siren ( I wired two to myne ) and indicator light, n park under CCTV,

(*With other pedal boxes you can still grind the pedals off, remove and drive with pedal stumps..)

32 seconds to get a disclok off? That's still 32 seconds longer than if the disclok wasn't fitted.
lf the vehicle alarm is sounding, or there's other security as well, it may still be enough to prevent theft of the vehicle.

Few security products will withstand an angle grinder for long. You can only do the best that you can.

he did say 32 seconds and it was his first time...... if he knew where to cut, (which landy tea leafs will) it would be just a few seconds.....

I find leaving a fresh turd on each seat puts the potential thief's off

You can't do much if a thief has an angle grinder
Then you need to rely on your alarm/immobiliser

Cordless grinder with 1mm sliting discs are a bit of a weapon.

Well, it means the use of noisy tools to steal your Land Rover which if nothing else, might alert you to the attempted theft if you are close by.

Combine visible deterrent such as disc lock with other security devices and just hope for the best.

Oh, and get agreed value insurance, so if the worst happens at least you should get the true value of your vehicle.

The insurance is something I’ve been thinking about, I’m doing a lot of work on my defender, do you have any recommendations?

l could only get Adrian Flux to do Agreed Value on my 2005 Defender, they seem alright but l think it depends on what insurance company they put you with.

The Agreed Value is with a different company (Adrian Flux are brokers of course) and it's a bit of a faff, as they keep asking for seven new photos of your Land Rover, even for a mid term valuation change when they have photos from six months ago.

I've never seen the point of doing that. All a thief has to do is buy one of his own and use that.

@Mackers got a Toad alarm fitted to his.
To be fank, any alarm with remote enable/disable and vibration + motion sensing will do. You want it to go orf if the vehicle is moved or someone smashes the window. I would wire it to the doors and donnet anorl.
Other things to do are to fix anti tamper screws to all the door hinges, lights etc.

Be better with more physical deterrents. Decent steering lock, pedal lock, battery cut off maybe a whee clamp etc

Any vibration sensing + motion detection alarm would be a benefit. It would alert him to something happening. We often see peeps on ere report stolen tratters where they slept through it and the tratter was rolled away. Physical security it good but all it does is slow them down. Hopefully it will put them oft taking it. Alams are not perfect. You can get cheaper alarms without immobiliser options. They don't sell them anymore but something basic like a sparkrite sr100 would be ideal. A newer version of something simular would be good.
