Hi, 2002 Disco 2. Transmission light comes on after climbing long steep hill. Changed fluid today, went for drive, again, light came on at top of hill. Went out again after descending hill. I know it might be sensor. Does anyone on here live in Plymouth or surrounding area and how a diagnostic tool i could use? I can pay... thanks

Hi, did you change the oil temp. switch & cure the light coming on?
My 'project' TD5 had the light on when I picked it up. The switch was closed circuit when I tested it, even when cold, so as sierrafery says it's just a case of replacing it (about £50).
When I took the sump of the auto g/box to change the filter the O-ring had been split by whoever had been there before, the edges are very sharp on the filters so if you decide to take a peep/ change the filter be careful refitting it. You should get a new O-ring with a new filter.

If it is going on and off then obvs something is triggering it. So the switch must be working, just hopefully not at the right temperatures. (Like Eric Morecambe's piano playing!)
Is the gearbox working OK? Any smells of hot oil? No ATF leaks like at the cooler? Picks up quickly when you move off from rest?
Only mentioning this cos apart from the smells i have had similar problems caused by low ATF due to a leak.
 
I would start by replacing the switch, but if that does not cure it, as Stanleysteamer points out, it may be that the switch is working properly and correctly reporting an overheating autobox. Assuming you are not towing something massive up a really steep hill, then an overheat should be unlikely in the UK; so if the switch turns out to be OK there may be an internal fault such as a failing internal pump, constricted cooling system, abnormal internal friction etc. Fingers crossed for the switch.
