Ashtray What's in yours?

This is not as simple as it first sounds

if you simply have ash in it - yuk!! gross!!

but if you have something else then shout up!

The reason I ask is that as a none smoker the ashtray in my Range Rover is almost redundant to collecting coins or dust, so looking for ideas on what to do with it.

Idea I had last night was to make the front ashtray into an iPod dock? not sure about the rear, but it needs a 12 socket for kids to charge up stuff, might just fit a USB plug as this takes up less room?

Thats a very good idea. You could also remove it totally, and use the space for a small switch plate.

There are lots of people that convert the old VW ashtrays to iPod docks (alot of them dont have stereos in), its good but you must do it well i.e. give support to the iPod, alot of people have cracked the sockets where they have just stuck them in and when they hit a bump they move too much. The on your desk style ones dont give enough support if you know what I mean, you need a cradle of sorts...

In the Disco, keys for fuel cap & wheel lock. In the 90, notebook mount for watching porn when driving.

thanks, just had a quick look using google and yes - seems to be a popular mod on VW

Spare number plate bulb.

just some odd screws and fuses in mine.

My ashtray on my Defender has been replaced with a raptor dash top pod

a five pence piece (dunno why!)

A blue twenty pence piece, screws, old bulb.

Well it would seem that just about everyone that isn't using it for ash, but for them it's become a dumping ground and a waste of space!

I like the idea of a ipod dock in the ash tray, tempted to start hacking my ash tray up now, , be good if the recess the ash tray is in , is deep enough that you could close the lid after you put the ipod in

i keep spare fuses in my landy ashtray and car park shrapnel in my chav box one.

the ashtray isn't deep enough - but cutting the bottom off you can always make it as deep as you like as loads of room should you wish to make it deeper.

I would like mine so the back of the iPhone/iPod will rest on the open lid for back support, but when the ashtray is closed there is no trace, as I hate having wires everywhere and want to keep a clean stock looking car

I'm the same, which is why it would be nice to be able to shut it in, may just run a cable through to the cubby box :thumbup:
