Afternoon,
Could anyone give me some idea of what angle (Normal Road) I should be able to drive up from stationary in my 110 Defender.

I have just found myself at the bottom of a steep hill, approx. 1/3 mile long, and the landrover just Ran out of steam going up. Standard 4 wheel High. I had to stop, drop it into 4 wheel low with diff lock and rev the bollox off to get it to crawl up.

The second questions is, yesterday morning when I started it up (on a 10 degree angle on my drive I have the most aweful rattle like metallic sounding clanging near my turbo vicinity - under a small increase in revs it shuts up - Any Ideas?

Thanks
K

it's fecked. what speed were you trying to do up the hill. it should have coped fine in 1/2 from standstill.

clutch stinking? bad compression? cloud of smoke out the back, etc

Summats definitely wrong .. even my old S3 got up a steep hill (Devon) towing a caravan, albeit in 1st (high).

Even my current (tired engine) 19j 90 manages 40 on hills towing the caravan, and can start and drive any hill on-road when not towing in high first ...

As said earlier, no need to use low box or difflock on the road. If you have to sue difflock then something is wrong with the drivetrain, half shafts, drive members, diffs, cv's, whatever ... .

Or the turbos about to fail.

Pull the pipe that sits at the front (facing you) of the turbo off, have a look inside and see if the turbo innards (the proper name eludes me) spin feely with no play.

Also as above check all your turbo hoses for splits and cracks.

Worth while checking your air filter isnt partially blocked too, just incase.

All easy to do in under 30 mins

Thanks Very much for the replies. I have been away working so haven't been able to access the site.

Apologies, I just had to put this into low (no diff lock).

No Smoke out the back, clutch is brand new. I was in 1 st gear, I had to slow down on the flat to get round a right turn, the road is only one car width, therefore into first and I would have expected this to just drive up normally.

I will have a look at the boost pipe, and check the air filter etc. I have also noticed that when driving along the motorway the other day, I am not getting the whistle of the turbo when accelerating - I get more of a hiss and it is not very defined. I am being to wonder if the turbo is one the way out.

how can I test to check the turbo?

thanks, k
