Arghh...Stoooooopid Handbrake!

Arghhhh...why is it, when trying to sort one thing, about another 5 problems appear.

I was under the 90 the other day taking front propshaft off to put a new UJ on it. While taking the propshaft off, I was moving it forward and back to get to the bolts. Anyway, like an idiot, I had left it in gear with the handbrake up...went to start it...you guessed it...it hurtles forward about 5 yards. I did this twice like a moron :doh:

My handbrake now is seized on. I've took the rear propshaft off and removed the drum, but every time I pull the handbrake up, none of the shoes seem to move up or down. I've played around with the adjuster, but to no avail. Also, when I release the handbrake...the lever doesn't stay at the bottom, instead it jumps back up a notch or two.

What have I done? Have I stretched the cable? Killed the mechanism? Something else?

It looks like I have an oil leak in the handbrake drum as well, so I'm guessing it needs a new oil seal. Any ideas how to get that whopping great big locking nut off? I'm guessing I need access to a pit?

I have a couple of good used brakes if you need one -- one with the cable that goes straight in and one with the lever. I'm just north of Leicester, could meet you somewhere in between if it helps.

depends on which hand brake it is with braket on side of t/box or direct cable to shoes ,but if its seized on how did you get drum off ,nut for undoing flange to get at seal is 30 mm, with theearlier bracket system you have probably pulled actuator too far ou and you could knock it back in

Mines the early rod one I think (1989).

When I say siezed, the adjuster was set to near its highest, so I altered the adjuster bolt, so the adjuster was set at its lowest. By doing this, it gave me enough movement to get the drum off.

With the drum removed, when I put the handbrake on and take it off again, none of the shoes move in any direction.

Does this sound like the rod is stuck? Is it just a case of hammering the rod back into place? Do I need to remove the shoes etc?

Not worked in this area before, so I'm learning as I go along with this one...

Buster has done a good photo guide if you find yourself needing to strip it down

try knocking lever back then it should work ,probably needed adjustment before allowing to much movement,the guides as said have good pics

Yes, look at Busters guide to rear output oil seal removal/repair. I did it all from underneath and good time to renew the shoes etc, they are very cheap!
