OK, so I've just bought a 90 and the previous owner 'threw in' a set of General SAG's mounted on some quite rusted white 8-spokes. I've attached a closeup of the worst of them, and I was just wondering if you guys would say they were still usable or not? They look a mess, but feel solid to me. I've given them a good whack with a hammer and nothing moves, and their are no holes that go right through, it all seem to be on the surface. I've already tried sanding/wire brushing down one of them, coating it with Kurust, and painting them with silver Hammerite smooth, and they come up OK (obviously not a smooth surface, but fine for my purposes for now). I'm planning on buying a set of silver modulars fitted with BFG MT's in the near future, but if these are usable I'd rather put off that purchase for a month or two. The tyres themselves have loads of tread, but a have a few small cuts in the sidewalls from off roading, which is the only use I'll use them for anyway. I'm guessing a professional tyre fitter wouldn't fit them to a new set of rims because of the sidewall damage?

I'd be intrested to hear your views as to whether they are usuable or only fit for a skip ;)

Oh ok !!!!!!

Ps. Forgot to say that the pull ring has broken off the tin of spam !!!!!!!:p

Could throw in a can of NETTO baked beans too !!!!!!:D

By the time you've paid for blasting, paint, paint brushes, carting the piggin things about, having the tyres taken off and re-fitted. You may as well have bought new ones. Have a look about see who's doing an offer on wheels and tyres.

Then send them to me, I'll top Retsies offer with a boiled sweet I found in my overalls pocket.

Nah, I won't be going to the bother of blasting them etc. I'm just flaking off the paint, brushing off all the rust, slapping on some Kurust and then painting them with Hammerite. It'll do the job for now at least, and will cost not much more than a tenner for all five.

Ive found with land rovers that something isn't rotten until you can stick your finger through the Berger.

I will be happy to test them for you!

Ahh, they should be back on by sometime next week ;) I'm almost done repainting them, and they'd don't look too bad :D Mind you, I still fancy a set of silver modulars and some BFG MT's, so I might sell them on a couple of months time, but these will have to do until my bank balance recovers a bit from the initial purchase (do bank balances ever recover after a Landie purchase :D ).
