Are relays vehicle or circuit specific?

I know this will probably sound like a dumb question to most, but I simply don't know and several Googles later I'm still none the wiser.

Are relays as interchangeable as fuses, i.e. can I just pick up any "40A" relay from Halfrauds and swap it with one that's burnt out? Or do I need to find a specific part / type / etc?

Again, apologies for my lack of knowledge but I've never had to touch relays before so I simply don't know!

Some are specific. If the relay is burnt, it's possible, even likely that the fuse box has burtn too. It's quite a common problem:eek:

I haven't checked it yet, but have a "handbook symbol" on the ATC ECU display and I've read that the most common cause is a failed relay 7. Getting a little ahead of myself, but it occurred to me that if I found it to be faulty, I wouldn't know where to get a replacement or which one to get, etc. No amount of Googling seemed to help.

Safest bet is LR as the relays have supression built in, Halfrauds may not.

If your radio is working don't think it will be relay 7. Relay 7 also feeds radio and sat nav. 1999 models others may differ.
Oh, yeah the radio works (I have no built-in sat nav). It's a 1995 petrol, if that makes any difference.
