Are Britparts really that bad?

I need a new starter motor (or will soon as current one is on it's way out).

Britparts are selling for £90 vs Island 4x4 for £150.

Is it worth the risk to save £60?

No Britparts are not all bad. They are a distribution company and get their parts from various sources. Sometimes those sources are not as good as they maybe should be. Piper cams are a reasonably reputable company or used to be, top quality bits. Have just fitted a cam kit from Piper to my lads Escort RS turbo. The cam followers supplied were made from putty. Absolute crap. These days it is a lottery sometimes even with factory parts unfortunatly. The counterfeiters are getting their stuff in everywhere. Mostly Chinese and Indian ****. You just do not know anymore.

britpart is a wholesaler of parts along with bearmach and allmakes,they all do different ranges ,genuine,oe,oem,pattern ,well known makes,the pattern stuff can be poor ,most part suppliers could offer full range but tend to advertise cheapest,who ever you buy from they are getting from one of above ask what optionsmare available

I had to replace my starter motor about 4 years ago on my V8 and got a Britpart from Island at around £55. It's been fine.
Before you dive in and buy one, get yours checked over by a specialist reconditioner. If it's just a clean and new brushes or the solenoid and it may work out cheaper.

On my original, the insulation on the windings had broken down and it was cheaper to replace the motor.

The starter motor is beginning to take several key turns before it starts (sometimes fine sometimes takes 2 ot 3 goes before it starts).

I was just going to replace the whole thing as easier to just take out and replace so car is still useable rather than trying to resolve an unknown issue? I also don't know how much of a pig it will be to get out so don't want to have to do several times if doesn't work the first time and I end up replacing anyway.

Actually turns out that it's a bit irrelevant as the Britpart motor was for a V8 and the diesel version is £188 so probably going to Island anyway (or maybe Ebay).

You will need a 6mm a/f X 1/2" square drive socket bit to remove the two allen socket head screws that secure the starter to the block. You will also need a couple of extensions , long & short to get the top bolt. work from underneath the car, remove the top bolt first (It's the most difficult to get to) then remove the bottom one. To refit, fit the bottom one first, finger tight. Put the top bolt onto the allen key and extension bar, wrap a bit of masking tape around the head and the key just to keep it on there...don't go mad with the tape..and use the extension bar on it's own like a screwdriver to locate the bolt in the hole and spin it up finger tight, fit the ratchet and lock it up. Finish up by tightening the lower bolt.

I just got a unipart one for £108 including vat.

I never buy britpart if I have a choice, just got a fuel tank from them as I had no choice but it had rust inside from new :doh:

That's normal, they try to make parts to match the rest of the car. As it's a classic rust is included free of charge. A wonderful touch don't you think.

its the only rust on her now, the rest is stuck in my skin and on the drive, along with my blood and sweat :doh:
