L322 Anyone want to watch an L322 burn?

I think you may just have been slightly frowned on by the RR Gods. I had 3 or 4 good years with mine, around £1.5k over the period. Then RR ownership struck and suddenly I'm about £13k poorer and it did what yours has, one thing after another. However, what I now have a 15yr old chassis, with a 6months-3 yr old everything else. Which I'm quite happy with. If I changed her for something else, I would be buying someone else's problems. By the sounds of it you have a similar situation, between all the work Ant did before he surrendered, then what you have done, you almost have a new car. You won't get your money back through selling or trading and if you can just get over the hump, you will once again have the vehicle you dreamed of. The guys here are always willing to help, even more so when you are at the end of your tether. However, only you can decide if you can write off all you have invested in it and just walk away , or spend a bit more.

So here is the video. Forgive the shaky camera work, I have a huge camera and had to hold the steering wheel on full lock with my other hand. I also had to contend with traffic... This is more about the noise the steering makes.

I know exactly how you feel. I got a cheap 02 plate V8 on lpg and it seems to like to throw up an issue every week/fortnight. I got it for around £3k but refuse to spend a grand a month fixing it so it'll be a short lived love affair. Lovely car to drive but waiting for the next wallet draining event takes the edge off of it.

Currently developed an air suspension inactive fault which I reset but then the arse end sits right down a mile or so later.

Should have kept my Defender . No where near as comfy or refined but the kids loved it, pony club mums loved it, got lots of waves from fellow defender drivers and relatively easier/cheaper to keep on the road .

Spool valve in rack is my guess.

Too much time spent( bad word) idle with crap fluid in the system waiting for end of the month pay cheque.

Sorry, couldn't resist.;)

I know exactly how you feel.. the P38 was kicking my arse this year.. started with a misfire on No.7 being a head gasket leak, followed up by a heater matrix leak.. followed by an alternator failure and dead batttery. Followed by a cat failure..

Finally I have got over the hump. 6 years of only minor failures and fixes and since March it's had to take a back seat what with new baby and new job..

Its running spot on again.. though it's a P38 not an L322 do its easier to fault find and fix and cheaper in parts... however when the wife goes back to work in November a Range Rover is too big for the hospital car park..

bugger!

I had mine 10 months, great fun, really annoyed at giving someone a new tow bar.

In the scheme of things, I got off with a light abrasion and a loving kiss from mummsy, with the promise of a plaster if leakage ensued.

what ****ed me off is that there was only cosmetic stuff left. A torn seat base, a split switch, replacement heater vent and a new passenger door mirror needed. All the mechanics and electrics were done.

Then, all of a sudden it does this and throws a bunch of error codes at me.

All fluids were replaced when I got her. And most have been replaced again since then due to the work done on her.

Modern steering racks are under enormous stress, mostly due to steering whilst completely stationary.....add in a L322 with excess flab, wide tyres.... et voila......groans.

I don't know...

But contrary to my opinion, in the last 2 years I have bought 2 premium heavy cars, same model/marque which BOTH displayed extreme problems with the steering. I though rack on both occasions, but went cheapo first, and I was pleasantly left with money in my wallet.

Car 1....whining and notchy steering >CURE=New resorvoir (perfect for over 15k to date.)

Car 2....stiff and notchy at idle >CURE=second hand pump (perfect for 2k to date)

I'd maybe try a used pump first.

Stick with it, it's only springs and ball bearings, and second hand parts can be your friend.
Less than 20 years ago you would of been well furqued, like most of us,......apart from @wammers , he's made of different stuff.
Imagine this site if he'd come out of his comfort zone and de-encrypted an L322 instead of resting on his laurels, eh,,,,,,eh?

Don't know much about L322's but this sounds like a worn drive belt jumping around on the pump pulley under heavy load - or a loss of sufficient belt tension. Full lock throws a great strain on hydraulic systems and should as a matter of course be avoided generally speaking.

Hmmmmmm. I think the jumping PAS belt could be a starter for 10. Once on full lock, the pump tried to pump against a "dead head" i.e. There is nowhere for the fluid to push against, so it loads the pump more, which in turn stresses the belt. If the belt is not tight enough, it may jump and grab occasionally causing the judder

When I got mine (its a 97) I got it almost brand new, still lot of silly things needed doing , but not a lot of help out there at the time, its so different now, lots of sites and lots of help and real enthusiasts to help you out, I agree its bummer when its going ****, but man when its 100% its soo sweet, like walking on air, and its all leagle, was riding with my son the other day in her, and I said to him, I *ucking love this car when its right, hope you can get it sorted bud, and enjoy it again, its a love affair, not a car

I've just got back from the specialist. he could only have a very quick look as they were closing when I got there just before 9am due to one of them having a heart attack this morning!

He reckoned it was the belt tensioner, worst case a power steering pump. At most £300. I mentioned all the fault codes and he said its deffo not misfiring so he would clear them all. He said the engine itself sounds fine.

Right now I've simmered down from "Active Hate" to "Strong Dislike". Let's see how I feel when the damn thing is fixed. Again...
