Anyone used OIL SPY ?

Anyone used it, seems like a pretty good product.

From website: This unique, easy to handle product will analyse engine oil in approximately 15 minutes, giving the earliest warning of problems that could affect the weakest link in the engine… the oil. One drip of warm dipstick oil on the special pad will identify deficiencies and root causes that could otherwise cause catastrophic engine failure.

Might be a good thing to carry before and after buying a vehicle?

and how dear - in relation to a fresh fill of oil - is one of them?

It's now pretty standard practice to sample oils in gearboxes rather than replacing it, especially in the food industry where oils must be foodsafe (read expensive!), but for an engine which uses £10-15 worth of oil at a time...

You get 26 tests in a box for £12.95, so 50p per test.

The point I suppose is it will pick up on water, coolant or fuel in the oil etc so might stop someone buying a ****ed motor or pick up on any issues with a motor currently owned. If I was going to buy a vehicle this simple test might prevent buying a nail

Looks good steve, but why do you want 26 of them for???, i thought this was a one off test, its pointless to keep testing and testing if your just gonna get the same result and if there is something wrong it'll pick it up on the first test??

or am i talking complete poop ??

No its a valid point.

I'd guess that @ £12.95 its a no brainer if when going to view a vehicle it saves buying a vehicle thats ****ed even if you only use it once and it picks up on a head gasket issue (water/coolant in oil), or fuel in oil (injector issue etc), but I suppose testing your own vehicle once in a while can identify possible issues before they get serious enough to cause a mechanical fail.

Spose its one of those little boxes that can sit in the garage and be useful from time to time

Nice find I guess all it is is a kinda blotting paper that separates the contents of the oil, Its worth a try

I dont know exactly, there are alot of different grade filter papers around. And, its £12.95. If it was massive money I might search around, but its in a nice tin and there is email support if you get a result you are not sure about.

26 bits is just over 2 years of checkin yer K-series every month for first signs of HGF. sounds like a worthwile investment for that alone might get some...

I guess its not bad for the money but it doesnt tell you much What contaminents are in the oil? is it metal like ally or lead or is it silicon/dirt. Doesnt tell you the soot content which is quite important in diesels. Also doesnt give values, how much fuel is in the oil? you will generally always see a bit but it would be nice to quanitify it so you can see how big a problem it is.

Seems more of a gimmick to me

Telling me I've got fuel or coolant in my oil seems pretty valuable to me.

Maybe you need a laboratory in your glovebox

But as I said, quantity is more useful than just a yes/no answer. For instance, 1% fuel dilution is not abnormal but 10% and you have a problem.

And I dont need a lab in my glovebox, I have one at work thanks

Read the info on the oil-spy site.

They do actually cover small amounts of fuel in oil....
