My TD5 has just had a service and MOT. I am being told by the 4X4 specialist that the clutch is shot. I have had no problems with it but he says it is not as smooth changing gear as it should be and I have just got used to how it feels.
In my experience, when a clutch is going, the bite gets progressively higher until the clutch starts slipping but this is not the case with mine.

He is saying a new clutch fitted is about £400, Unless the "Dual Mass flywheel needs changing, that would then be £800, and driving it as it is will eventually wreck the flywheel (If is not already wrecked), so the sooner I get it changed the more chance of a £400 bill not £800.

I am also told that it has a misfire as well and needs connecting to a computer (I suspect "Textbook") to find the cause of that. I just thought it was a bit sluggish.

I would like someone local with a TD5 to have a drive in mine and give me a second opinion before I shell out some of my childrens inheritance.

if i were you matey i,d book in for a diagnosis on your missfire, and has for the clutch i,d drive it till it goes if your happy with it.stiff gear changes could be anything.be carefull my friend if your unsure book it in to another garage for second opinion for all i know your mot garage could be right and i could just be talking a load of s--t:eek:it has been known.cheers craig

Pull your handbrake on hard, select 3rd gear, apply loads of throttle and lift clutch

If you can get your foot off the clutch pedal before it stalls, your clutch is knackered - if not keep on running ;)

the dual mass flywheel costs £400?! Just did a quick search a flywheel should cost you about £235 (that could be for a single mass one though it didn't say) If I were getting the clutch done I would probably change the flywheel at the same time for reliability as it shouldn't really add anything to the labour costs as you have to get to it to change the clutch anyways. I have always found that land rovers don't have a very smooth gear change anyway I had a freelander as a courtesy car once it only had 3k miles on it and it was awful! could just be freelanders tho

Your going back a few years:rolleyes: A clutch with a cable will need ajusting now and again, the clutch wears the clutch bite rises with the peddle as the clutch wears and cable stretches!

Your Td5 has a hydraulic clutch so you wont get this.As already said if you bang your right foot down whilst driving and yours refs shoot up but your speed does'nt then it's slipping if not it's fine.

Duff duel mass flywheels usualy make a right racket at tick over.

Perso think your being taken for a ride

PS: Sorry I'm a bit too far away!

Hi again, thanks for all the replys and sorry for the delay in getting back on (been away on company business for a couple of days). I am now convinced that the clutch is OK. and as for the misfire, I am not convinced that it has one but it does seem a bit slow pulling away until the revs get up but when they do it goes well.

Oh Sam, thanks I have also found dual mass flywheels online at about £280

I will PM a couple of peeps that offered help though for a second opinion (I am in Ilkeston).

Ta for your comments.
