calling all rivvet counters and series historiand can anyone help me to understand this

now first we all know where the engine number is on a series engine but i cant get my head round mine as it doesnt look right to me

ive been told that the engine number should be an 8 digit number followed by a letter such as 12345678a

so why is my engine number just 5 digits and no letter just 12345

is this something to do with reconditioning or the military or is it something more sinnister

any info or even opinions on this will be more than welcome as im up to me witts end with the whole investigation on my landy

god dammit i feel like a mushroom kept in the dark and fed on bulls#*t

cheers fella thats got me clued up on whats what and it appears i have some kind of rebuilt engine with a serial number relating to who or wherever rebuilt the bugger

:praise::praise:

mine is puzzling me too, according to the chassis number - and plate - mine must have started off as a petrol, the 906.......... engine number on the v5 corresponds to a diesel engine and the v5 says fuel is heavy oil.

the engine in it now must be a replacement as the key to start the engine is separate from the ignition key, looks like a very old diesel as there is a separate kill lever to choke it off.

Engine number seems to be F291735791 which doesn't conform to any numbers on the glencoyne site.

I guess this means my engine is either a recon job or a non standard engine.

I assume also i need to notify the dvla of the correct number.

im glad this fred reappeared ......cheerrs lads

i have a ickle question thats a bugger to understand

at the moment me series 10j diesel 2.25 3 bearing injun has developed a serious habbit of using about a pint of oil a day and burning it good n proppa ( badass blue smoke )

now i know what needs to be done so while ordering the new valves and valve guides and all other tinkly bits of inner engine bling me supplier asked me a question i couldnt answer

it seems the exhaust valves are all a standard size for the diesel engine but theres 2 different types of inlet valve for the same engine relating to the suffix letter on the engine number wich i dont have

is it possible we have a rivvet counter or better still a valve counter within the vecinity to give me a clue as ive ordered both types just to make sure ( £12 a set of 4 aint gonna kill me is it )

im just worried if theres verry little difference in the two types how do i tell wich ones i need

have you valves and collets got a single groove or 3

got triple teeth collets ( remembered from last time i did the stem oil seals )

i did the oil seals bout 150 miles ago and checked them again this weekend and it dunt look good

4 blown off and are at the top of the valve shaft in the spring 1 valve stem chipped on top and 2 cocked over by about half a degree with slight wobble

gonna do the friggin lot of them with the head off to be totally right this time ;)
