Anyone changed a Disco clutch...?

Yup, this bank holiday weekend me and a mate are going to attempt to change the clutch in my 98' Disco. Question is, is it better to remove the engine (if so, does one have to de gas the air con) or the gearbox (seems much more work). Those who have atempted this, can you offer any advice.

U can do it alone if u go the gearbox way and u don't need a crane or such. so, in my opinion, it's far easier moving the gearbox. have a look here to see how it's done: 300TDi Disco clutch change

It's a Disco mark one. According to the Haynes manual they recommend whipping out the engine. I agree it would seem easier to take out the gearbox but why do they bang on about the removing the engine?

Inertia I guess. Forget about Haynes. Get the real thing: a LR workshop manual.

I've seen a clutch plate (removed from a 1996 Disco), nearly new only a tenner on ebay. Is it strictly a "no no" buying one 2nd hand if not what should I watch out for?

For the amount of work in removing engine or transmission to gain access to the clutch, I would recommend new parts, perhaps even genuine parts. Otherwise its a case of penny wise pound foolish. I would get a new clutch kit and fork and have a good look at anything else thats worth changing while youre i n there. Unless of course you take gearboxes and engines out for a pastime!

Whilst using the link that was supplied, would it be possible to change the rear crank seal as mine has a slight weep? Or would that be a box out completly.
